The Class of 1926 graduation week closed with a six hundred strong crowd at Teton High as the Junior Class of 1927 hosted a legendary prom. The gym dazzled with rainbow paper, shaded lamps, spider web walls, and colored butterflies, a setting praised as unequaled in beauty.
Frank W. Haskins of Butte and Jas M. Burlingame of Great Falls paid an official visit to Bethany Commandery No 19 in Chateau Monday evening. They attended a regular meeting followed by a banquet and were accompanied by their wives Mrs Haskins and Mrs Burlingame.
Helena May 24 Scott Leavitt of Great Falls filed with the secretary of state for nomination on the republican ticket to succeed himself in Montana s second district He is a two term incumbent native of Michigan and a former U S forest service member He served in the Spanish American War and as federal director in Montana during World War I John R Oliver of Ekalaka also announces a Republican candidacy for the nomination but has not filed yet.
State to open offices for recruiting harvest hands in Great Falls Lewistown and Bainville June 15 in cooperation with the U S Employment Service and the Montana Department of Labor Official Barclay Craighead says more than 3000 men are needed statewide for the 1926 crop Labor demand will rise during planting digging and picking season Wheat harvest begins in Texas and moves northward with July August and September the peak months in Montana Prospects for crops are better than normal and the new offices aim to direct labor accordingly
The Chateau grade school will need two more teachers for next year after hiring Miss Florence Daley for the fourth grade and Mr. Claude H. Whitley as part time eighth grade and manual training instructor. A primary teacher is to be hired to replace Mrs. Jack Sweat and a teacher to replace Miss Plummer, who marries R. E. Giese in San Diego June 16. Mrs. Hugh Wypper will teach full time in the fifth grade next year. Miss Daley is a former Choteau resident, daughter of John J. Daley of Dupuyer. Whitley comes from Washington State Normal College in Cheney.
Notices invite boys and girls of Bole to a July picnic sponsored by the Ladies’ Community Club. Participants must work individually and be 15 years old or younger. Tails must be strung 10 on a string and hung to dry for prizes.
Generous rains across the county last weekend followed by cooler weather revived crops and eased anxiety among farmers. County readings show varying moisture with Pendroy and nearby towns reporting higher rain totals while Chateau area measured about .30 inch. Some crop damage noted as worms affected 15 acres on Jay Lyon’s Spring Creek Dairy farm four miles north of Chateau.
Helena reports an average of 1,665 state employees receive salaries each month with outlays exceeding 200000. April totals 204265.61. Lee Dennis records payrolls. funds also come from revolving accounts and federal sources. Only about 49000 of the 204000 goes to Helena residents. Bozeman and Missoula receive substantial shares with the rest spread statewide.
M. C. Crawford filed today with the county clerk his nominating petition for a place on the Republican ballot at the August primaries as a candidate for county assessor. He came from Westhope, North Dakota in 1909 to homestead and now lives in Choteau with eight children and a wife.
County Agent Robert Clarkson reports that 5080 pounds of gopher poison were distributed to Teton county farmers from Fairfield to Choteau at cost. He estimates the program will destroy about 304000 gophers, saving roughly 30000 bushels of wheat worth about $47,500, yielding a net cash saving near $47,000.
L. E. Taylor of the Ford Garage on Main Avenue has arranged to rent the old bakery building next to his location. Work will begin to remodel that building as a display and sales room, with the project starting immediately.
Two hundred fourteen district middle school students were named eligible to take state exams held across the county on Monday and Tuesday. The list, compiled by the county superintendent, includes students from Chateau Grade School and numerous districts with dozens of names across multiple locales.
Leroy Gaare aged 14 raises a Holstein he got through a county calf club. The cow, now three years old with its second calf, averages 52 to 60 pounds of milk daily at four percent tests and is projected to yield 450 pounds of butter fat this year. Gaare keeps strict records and weighs milk, trading the first calf for a steer whose sale proceeds support his bee‑business‑minded brother. Memorial Day events in Choteau feature a Legion led program with a parade, military services, and grave decorations at the cemetery.
Mrs Chas T Wood long time proprietor of the City hospital sells all furnishings and equipment to Dr George E Keller. Possession will be given June 1 and the hospital will be renamed Glenloyd hospital with Dr Keller as active manager and residency. It will remain open to all licensed physicians.
Miss Margaret Taylor youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Taylor has been twice honored in Seattle by dinner invitations from Mr and Mrs Howard Chandler Christy. She has won praise for her art work and studies with top teachers while working in Seattle design departments. Christy praised her promise and bright future in art.
Helena May 24. Analysis of May rainfall to May 22 shows moisture favorable in western Montana and northeast while east central border counties face inadequate rain affecting crops. Bowman commissioner notes Gallatin valley already met May normal, but large central swath needs rain. Prairie and Rosebud counties report drought effects and potential permanent damage in parts of the state.
John Jacobson of Bole pleaded guilty to illegal possession of intoxicating liquor and received a $200 fine and 60 days in county jail. Judge Greene ordered immediate custody and refused to delay the sentence. Jacobson, a blacksmith, asked to start serving next fall to assist in summer plow point sharpening in Bole after a Great Falls train arrival, with two gallons of moonshine found in his satchel.
