Choteau’s American Legion Post and its Armistice Legacy
The Three Rivers district American Legion convention will meet in Choteau with state commander Ory Armstrong present. The Choteau post, sixth in Montana, dated its founding to August 28 1919, with charter members from 22 attendees. Early activities included dances shows and welfare work, while later efforts funded a city park pavilion and memorial observances. The post grew to about 50 members with a history of ups and downs and continued service to veterans and the community.

Jas. Baldwin Passes Buried Wednesday in Choteau Cemetery
Jas Baldwin 63 a Cho teau resident for 13 years died Monday at Choteau hospital after a week’s illness. Born Morris Minnesota January 9 1875 he worked in railroad signaling then homesteaded near Joplin before moving to Chateau in 1925. He was associated with Teton Drug Co and a member of Choteau Lodge No 44 A F and A M. Burial was in Choteau cemetery with Masonic rites and pallbearers L E Taylor P J Cole C D McDonald B Packer K E Sturgis E M Bammel. The nearest survivor is R Nelson or his cousin.

Julius Hirshberg Visits Chateau and Plans Summer Stay
Julius Hirshberg spent Monday in Chateau visiting friends and handling business. He recently returned from California where he spent the winter and notes that Mrs Hirshberg is improving. He plans to spend part of the summer here later.

Eighth Grade Diplomas Presented At Chateau High
Forty two eighth graders received diplomas at graduation exercises in the county high school auditorium. Rev. R F Vick spoke on Life A Land of Wonders and praised perseverance. Miss Ruby Miller presented diplomas to the class of 1938 with thanks to Miss Jane Morton.

Dutton Merchant Enters Political Arena
Jonas Johnson a Dutton merchant who ran in the 1934 Democratic primary for state representative filed again on Thursday May 12 seeking the same office. His petition pledges to represent Teton county impartially and support beneficial proposals. Johnson owns Johnsons Cash and Carry grocery and has a history in local civic groups.

Engagement Announced for Miss Jane Morton
Announcement states Miss Jane Morton will marry Earl Cornquast of Morris Minnesota. Morton a public school faculty member for three years plans to leave for Monticello Minnesota and marriage is expected soon. Celia Richards hosted a handkerchief shower at the Post Tavern with teachers and friends. Hendrickson gave a sugar and creamer gift shower after graduation exercises at the same venue.

Legion District Convention Moves to Old Citizens State Location
The annual Legion convention is set for Saturday in the Larson block at the old Citizens State site. Activities include a 3 PM business meeting led by Frank Flaherty with R. M. Hendrickson, plus a fellowship gathering, auxiliary tea, district program, and a 7 PM joint banquet at the Masonic temple with a parade, dance, and public programs. Tickets: banquet 75 cents, dance $1 per couple.

District No. 7 raises funds for cancer control drive
District No. 7 reported donations totaling 230.62 for cancer control work under the Women s Field Army. Miss Hazel Andersen announced the drive on Monday with 70 percent to be used in the state and the remainder sent to national headquarters. Contributions by towns included Fairfield 41.00 Chateau 40.50 Dutton 14.00 and other amounts totaling the district sum.

Ory Armstrong Set to Visit Choteau May 28 As Legion Leader
Ory J. Armstrong of Kalispell, commander of the American Legion Department of Montana, will be guest of honor at the Three Rivers district convention in Choteau. He is the son of James William Armstrong, a Montana and Chateau pioneer, whose family moved from St. Louis in 1865 after Lincoln's assassination. The Armstrongs settled near Col ling at the Muddy and Teton confluence and saw tragedy when Mrs. Armstrong was murdered, prompting a local citizen's hanging of the killer. James Armstrong ran a livery in Chateau and held a Deep Creek homestead before 1928.

Collins bids for county treasurer on Democratic ticket
J I Buss Collins filed on May 14 for the Democratic nomination for county treasurer in the July 19 primary. A native of Teton county and son of former sheriff J I Collins, he grew up in Blackleaf, ran a sheep shearing outfit, moved to Chateau last fall, and now co-owns Club Cigar in partnership with Grover Forgey. He is married with two children and has not held public office before.

Elk Calf Tagging Begins Again For Migration Study
The U S forest service starts a second year of tagging elk calves to study migration. In the Cabinecneek district of Sunriver, tags dated with year and tagging site will be placed at birth or within hours after. Hunters are asked to send tagged elk data to the state fish and game commission.

Early Day High School Reunion Banquet Planned Tonight
A banquet at 9 o clock at the Post Tavern marks the reunion of Teton County High School students from 1901 to 1907. The event honors A G B Guthrie, former principal, with Mrs Gertrude Trescott Jameson as arrangements chair and Mrs Maude Wilcox as secretary. All attendees, whether graduate or not, are invited and many plan to stay for Friday night commencement.

Former Choteau Man Visits Great Falls
Former Choteau resident John Swain, once manager of the local gas office, spent a brief visit in Great Falls with his wife Mrs. Swain. They now reside in Helena and were in town a few days at his brother Robert Swain’s home.
