The Montana Supreme Court upheld a 1914 uncontested divorce decree, ruling to retain the original decree. The case involved long history and potential future precedents in divorce actions seeking to set aside decrees for property settlements. Bert I. Packer represented the plaintiff Schmidt, arguing preservation of the decree’s status.
Jay G. Diamond reports winter wheat conditions improved in the last week and indicate a 17,808,000 bushel crop from 1,113,000 acres. May 1 estimate exceeded April 1 by 100,000. Last year the state yielded 24,581,000 bushels from 1,046,000 acres.
Forest Ranger George Duvendack spoke at the third weekly tourist school meeting about recreational opportunities in the Rocky Mountain division of the Lewis and Clark National Forest. He cited 1000 miles of trails, scenic trips, limited automobile roads, and rich fishing and hunting options around Sun River and tributaries near Choteau.
The fourth and final meeting of the tourist schools will feature Herb Winner discussing the history of Teton County and County Agent Fred Willson addressing local resources. organizers expect a large crowd and promise two fine addresses.
Mr. Duvendack describes Sun River primitive area with Pulfingen and South Fork Flathead forming 900000 acres of undeveloped country. He covers wildlife including elk deer moose mountain sheep grizzly and black bears, plus predators and game birds, and emphasizes fire prevention and rugged rules for entering the forest.
The local Lions club will travel to Augusta to be guests of Capt. Joseph S. Harbison and camp personnel. Members must leave Chateau to reach the camp by 6 p.m. for dinner and the program on schedule. late arrivals face a customary fee.
The Works Progress Administration approves a $3266 grant for sanitary sewers in Hobson's Addition, in Special Improvement District No 1. Mayor Hentges' last year’s application led to the approval. Local property owners pay for materials while the WPA funds labor, with final action pending state health board clearance and WPA administrator approval.
R E Nelson chairs the touring advertising committee as a museum idea moves from possibility toward certainty. Local businesspeople respond to subscription drives for restoring the old Tabernacle building and outfitting the museum with Western and Indian curios. Donations will fund renovations rental painting signs and related costs while relics are insured and cataloged prior to opening.
Continued dry weather hurts crops in Teton county and near Chateau with no substantial rain for weeks. Storms darkened skies Tuesday and Wednesday. light showers reached Dutton Pendroy and the Gap district, but Choteau saw no measurable rainfall. Week temperatures not specified.
About 200 attended the fourth annual amateur night contest by the Lions club at the high school auditorium. Terry Tennant won first prize of 10 dollars with a saxophone solo. second prize went to a mixed quartet led by Ted Swenson and Bill Baillie took third with a xylophone medley. Sixteen numbers were presented including vocal, instrumental, and dance acts with varied performances and two non competitive numbers entertaining the audience.
A new Kellogg No.1 well, six miles northwest of the Pondera oil field, struck oil at about 2850 feet in the Madison lime. Initial flow estimates were uncertain as the well, drilled with a rotary, requires testing. tools from Cut Bank are en route to clean the well after blasting. Geologist B B Emrick located the structure, with Zodiac Oil Co. headed by L J Freeman.
Money donated for memorial poppies on Poppy Day goes entirely to aid disabled veterans and their families. Volunteers distribute flowers and fund welfare and rehabilitation through the American Legion and Auxiliary. The poppy is a symbol of remembrance and support for those who suffered in national service.
Local anglers gear up for the fishing season opening on Sunday May 21 as rains and melting snow raise stream levels and cloud waters. Despite poor conditions tackle shops report full gear lines and many fishermen plan early outings. The season limits are 15 pounds or 15 fish with up to five under seven inches. Salmon eggs are banned and set lines may be restricted. Several waters including Pishkun Reservoir Choteau Slough and Split Rock Lake have seasonal closures listed in state regulations.
