Chateau Lions Mark 20th Anniversary in High School Gym

More than 300 attendees joined the Chateau Lions club anniversary observance with awards cheerful ritual and speeches by leaders from Montana and Alberta. District Governor Ray Wesson received a 20 year perfect attendance badge, others earned 10 and 20 year chevrons, and a candlelighting service honored past Lions presidents. Delegates from Shelby Conrad Cut Bank Browning Kalispell and others attended zone meetings and a tea for district governors and Lions ladies. The club was chartered April 1927.

Kids Talent Program Sponsored by Youth Fellowship

A talent show for children under 15 will be hosted by the Intermediate Fellowship of the Methodist church on Friday evening May 23 in the Industrial rooms. Admission includes a vote for the best act with prizes of 3 2 and 1 dollars. Entry blanks are on page 5 and all youngsters may participate. The event ends with a pie social and proceeds go to the church building pledge.

VFEW Auxiliary Barbecue Picnic At Freeman Grove

The VFW and Ladies auxiliary plan a barbecue picnic for members or prospective members at Freeman Picnic Grove on Thursday May 22 at 6 45. Cars meet at Chateau Drug at 6 30. Call Duane Baker at 114M before May 21 to attend. The Ladies auxiliary met April 28 to elect officers.

Fairfield Man Dies by Gunshot on Farm

Fairfield farmer Albert Thompson, 66, formerly of Burton Beach, was found dead at his Fairfield farm with a self inflicted gunshot wound after despondency over a lost $800. Coroner says no inquest. Survived by wife, two sisters, two brothers, and stepson Chester Osberg. Funeral planned at St Pauls Lutheran Church.

Special Election on May 31 for 15 mill Levy at Chateau

A special election is set for May 31 at Chateau to approve a 15 mill school levy to fund higher teacher salaries to meet MEA minimum wage standards. Each mill raises about $1,066 for Chateau High and Grade schools. two ballots will be used for the two schools. A plebiscite vote is required, and if not approved, the district cannot hire qualified teachers next fall.

All Chateau businessmen will meet at City hall tonight promptly at seven o clock for a Chamber of Commerce meeting. The agenda includes suggestions for civic improvement and everyone is urged to attend.

Firemen Chiefs From 15 Cities Invited to North Central Fire School

Fire chiefs and department members from 15 Montana towns will attend a one day fire school in Choteau on Saturday May 24 sponsored by the Choteau Fire Department. Experts from Anaconda Helena and Butte will lead sessions on ventilation hose care and testing ladder work and fire prevention with a real workout planned for attendees.

Pioneer Raymond Anderson Rites Held At Parish

Raymond David Anderson 86, a longtime Choteau resident and Teton County pioneer, died Sunday at his home. A High Mass at St. Josephs parish was conducted by Rev. Fr. James J. Sheerin. Anderson helped build the Billings Miles City railroad and served as county commissioner. He married Anna Rose Manix in 1902 and was active in local schools and ranching. Continued on page 5.

Deadline Near On Applications For Price Support

Less than a week remains for potato producers with no acreage goal but planning price support to request an acreage measurement for 1947 production. The 2.9 acre small farm goal is automatic if no individual goal was requested before April 1. Friday May 23 is the deadline to request an acreage measurement. inquiries go to the county ACA committee in Chateau. Compliance with a goal does not guarantee price support. producers must declare intent and quantity later. Support follows the Steagall amendment at not less than 90 percent of parity to prevent excess crop use.

Funeral for Hazel Nordhagen in Choteau

Funeral services for Hazel Lorraine Nordhagen 24 wife of John Nordhagen were held Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church Choteau with Rev A B Gravdal officiating. Nordhagen died Saturday en route to a Great Falls hospital after two days illness. She was born January 21 1923 in Farmington educated there and in Choteau. She was a secretarial graduate of a Los Angeles school and worked for North American Aviation Co. She married John O Nordhagen in Las Vegas in October 1945 and returned to Choteau in January 1946. Survivors include her mother Mrs Laura Davidson Farmington and her siblings.

Jerry Breen of Chateau was elected commander of C. James Smith post No. 6 at the May American Legion meeting. Fred Meadows and E. C. Hensley were named vice commanders with C. D. McDonald as finance officer and Richard Conklin as chaplain. Joan Davison became historian and Cornelius Kooyman sergeant at arms. Delegates to District 8 meeting at Belt were Stuart Myers Bob Gronberg and Breen with alternates John Davison Ted Halvorson and Meadows. An American Legion State convention is planned in July at Billings.

Poppy Day Set by Legion Auxiliary in Choteau

The American Legion auxiliary announces Poppy Day on Saturday May 24 in Choteau and nationwide. Volunteers will hand out handmade crepe paper poppies to honor war dead and raise funds for disabled veterans and families, with chairwoman Mrs Carl Olson leading distribution citywide.

Summer Dances Begin At Chateau Legion Pavilion

Regular weekend summer dances start this Saturday at the American Legion pavilion in Chateau with Ken Thompson leading an eight piece orchestra. If attendance is favorable, dances will continue each Saturday night through the summer, barring Memorial Day weekend, under Legion auspices. The band includes saxophones, trumpets, drums, and piano with a 60 cent admission and dancing 10 PM to at least 2 AM.

Young District Judge to Speak at Teton County High Last Class

Judge Vernon B. Hoven of Plentywood will address 33 Cha teau high school graduates at the auditorium tonight. Hoven, once the nation’s youngest district judge, served as Sherman county attorney and later as 15th district judge, plus Navy service through 1945. The program includes processional, invocations, songs, a Chopin nocturne, and diploma awards by W G Dauwalder.
