Archie E B Leech won first place at the university preliminaries earning the right to represent the school at the state contest in Bozeman on May 3. Zeal Hirt took second with copper silver and gold. Roy Whitesitt spoke on An Ideal American. Judges were Rev E W Wright Rev C H Linley and Judge J M Evans.
A Great Northern report says passenger train No. 1 derailed at 4 PM two miles east of Midvale Mont. The engine and a compartment car remained on track. a mail clerk and several children were slightly injured. Cause unknown.
Chicago livestock receipts reach 20 000 cattle and 23 000 sheep with a steady market. Beeves bring 4.20 to 5.25, cows and heifers 2.60 to 5.25, calves 3.50 to 5.75, good to prime steers 5.30 to 5.60, stockers 2.90 to 5.15. Sheep natives and westerns 5.50 to 6.00, yearlings 7.00 to 7.90, lambs 6.50 to 8.65, westerns 6.50 to 8.70.
In Belt on April 29 Justice DesCombes dismissed charges against W S Tallman, a book agent, after he reached settlements with complainants who had funded partial payments. Tallman left for Great Falls, while county attorney Speer noted ongoing efforts to repay other creditors.
Judge Cornelius Hedges died at his Helena home early Monday of heart disease. Montana pioneer who arrived in 1864 served as U S district attorney in 1865 and territorial superintendent of public instruction for six years. He was the first state senator for Lewis and Clark county and helped found the Helena public library in 1868. Survivors include his wife Edna and several children.
Galen in response to S V Stewart renders an opinion on legality of automatic slot machines cane racks and raffles. He says machines delivering merchandise at regular prices are not prohibited as automatic retailing. Cane-rack may be run to fit as a game of chance. Raffling is covered by Section 580 of the penal code.
The Washington Herald discusses W G Conrad of Great Falls as a potential 1908 Democratic standard bearer. Born in Virginia he built a finance and cattle empire in Montana and is praised for integrity and broad yet conservative views. He recently returned from Canada where he bred cattle.
The county treasurer John B. Webb reports on file that as of April 30 1997 the on hand balance totaled 78595.31 dollars distributed across the county funds.

J H Devlin of Gold Butte plans a lawsuit to decide rights to improvements built on a government land entry canceled after a successful contest. Lumber and stone barn worth about six thousand dollars were removed by Sam Wood by order of the entry and a four room ranch house was sold. Legal questions hinge on timing of cancellation and right to demand a review within the 30 day window.
