Breakup Damage To Montana Highways Estimated At 350000 To 400000
The Montana road department projects spring break-up damage to highways at 350000 to 400000 this year, the heaviest in two or three years, with broader impact than last year. It excludes about 85000 in damages from Milk River floods on bridges and roads. Heavy snow runoff from unseasonably warm weather caused the damage. cooler weather could have reduced it. State Highway Engineer J A McKinnon notes most damage is on old roads and urges broad reconstruction, while maintenance crews must rely on temporary repairs until late season due to dry warm conditions needed for oiling.
