Last week on Thursday evening farmers and their wives enjoyed a successful gathering with a notable highlight the impromptu appearance of Father McGowan. He filled in for President Ralph of the Farmers Union and delivered a polished, thoughtful address admired by locals.
Lloyd Peterson of ten miles south buys the John Swenson quarter and his son Martin's quarter, joining them as two of the state’s best parcels. A first close well is sunk on each. Locals praise Peterson as a good neighbor and welcome his settlement.
Ole Gottlieb Depner and his wife along with Harold are moving onto a 750 acre property bought from Carl Malone. The southeast boundary sits 80 rods from the northwest line ensuring good neighbors on that side. They prefer decent neighbors to buying all adjoining land.
Freddy Swenson discusses large Cascade County wheat farms of about four thousand acres. He notes 24 hour operations and warns future bans on corporation farming and manufacturing for farmers, while condemning perceived farmer resistance.

The Teton Chapter of Future Farmers of America won the Glacier Park sweepstakes award at the annual meet held in Dutton on March 25. Choteau teams dominated grain judging poultry judging and public speaking earning 4 562 points. Conrad and Power followed. Jim Manual led grain judging high individual. Poultry team members and public speaker John Shoquist earned top honors. The cup donated by Cascade Milling and Elevator Company becomes permanent after three wins.
Polls open 2 to 6 P M Saturday for election of two school trustees at the public school. Incumbents Dr R G Keeton for a three year term and A E Strom for a two year term head the field. Judges named include Mrs Ed Baillie Mrs Louis Dewitt and Mrs Cora Allum.
Seven rally events are listed for the Teton Sun River district Court of Honor and Rally to be held at Chateau Saturday April 22 at 7 45 p m in the high school gymnasium. The event aims to be the district’s largest rally with every troop invited to present awards for advancement or merit badges. Activities include First Aid Fire by Friction Compass Relay Knot Tying Thesis Race Chariot Race O Grady mill.
Miss Mildred Erickson Camp Fire executive from Great Falls led an enthusiastic Saturday meeting at the Breen home to finalize plans for forming a Camp Fire group in Chateau. Final organization awaits satisfactory sponsorship. Guardians include Mrs. Gilbert Lee with Mrs. E C Hensley and Mrs. Passmore. Leaders will be Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. J W Breen.
Mrs. Eric Hedblom and Betty Jackson arrived home last week after attending the funeral of their brother Lawrence Jackson in Portland.
A 12 foot 4 inch tanned alligator hide displayed in Bloom's Grocery window attracts local interest. Everett Newman from LaFayette Louisiana brought it here during a visit to Pendroy. He describes how natives kill alligators and notes hides fetch 4 to 8 dollars to tanning firms for making shoes belts and handbags. Newman has been in Louisiana two years running a radio station for the Texas Oil Co.
Death announced in Portland Ore of Lawrence P Jackson 41 elder son of J G Jackson of Chateau following an operation for ulcers of the stomach. Survived by widow Sidney Foley of Victor Montana and a large family. Lawrence a teacher and band director born May 9 1898 in Waverly Nebraska. He taught in Browning Conrad Chateau Shelby Seattle and near Portland later running a kindergarten and music school with his wife. He was a conductor of orchestras and a staff member at the Portland Conservatory of Music and a former member of the Bobcat band tours. The community hails him as a dedicated music educator with a strong local reputation.
The Montana State Employment service under A. J. Moore lists high school boys for odd jobs in Chateau such as garden work and lawn care. It also notes several women registered for part or full time housecleaning positions. contact Mr. Moore at phone 1321.
Building contractors Ferche & Karafia of Great Falls began work this week on the Fairfield high school project. Foreman Clyde Palmer directs six workers excavating and digging ditches using local labor, with plans to add more men promptly.
A Lions Club meeting approved plans to boost Choteau tourism. A seven member committee will arrange a businessmen meeting to promote hospitality and provide information on points of interest, fishing, hunting and highways. Leaders include Nelson and Breen. Plans for an information booth, May 9th gathering, safety campaign, and a future amateur night were approved.
Voters in the town of Chateau will elect a mayor and four councilmen. Polls open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Ward one voters meet at the Bloom’s grocery building. ward two at City Hall. Mayoral candidates are K. E. Sturgis for Citizens and C. W. Burns for People's. Current councilmen Chick Sulgrove, Paul Kropp, A. H. Doughty, and H. Bloom are unopposed.
Telegraphed message from Senator Wheeler asserts President Annoves Bil would permit farmers with limited assets to access full federal crop insurance. He states the President has approved Reneult's bill and directs the Secretary of Agriculture to advance premiums for crop insurance.
The Rev. Richard F. Vick announces two sunrise services on Priest Butte Easter Sunday at 6 a.m. Worshippers will be greeted by Easter bells and hear Hallelujah Chorus followed by an Easter story and music. A breakfast will close the service.
County 4 H clubs meet at Teton county high school Saturday night for the Spring Rally also called the Junior Fun Feed. The event begins at 7 30 p m with a program from county 4 H communities followed by dancing and other recreation. Lunch is planned around 11 o clock so attendees may leave early.
The Montana county selects youths for the Civilian Conservation Corps April enrollment, with only a small number of spots left. Applicants must be 17 to 23, US citizens, unmarried, unemployed, and meet several conditions. Monthly stipend is $20 with room and board. candidates must allocate $22 to dependents.
Post says Great Northern Railway shifts departures to Bynum and Pendroy to 2 31 p m and returns to Great Falls at 5 52 p m from 6 17 p m The new times require mail to be dropped at 5 25 p m for Bynum and 5 80 p m for Pendroy at the local post office.
The Detter Hones Demonstration club will meet at Mrs. Ray McClue home on Monday April 3. Mrs tarry Porter will give a talk on gardening.
Mrs Halver Daley announced that Americanism essays for Legion and Auxiliary contests must be turned in by April. The call covers high school and grade school entrants, outlining submission timing.
The annual Farmére Fun Feed at the county high school drew more than 500 attendees from across the county for a community sing, dinner, and varied entertainment from Lib erty Center Beck Dutton Farming ton Agawam Spring Valley Fairfield Pendroy Dry Forks Diamond Valley Bynum Blackleaf Bole Belleview Power Greenfield Chateau. The dinner served by the home economics department and F F A members was praised as the best yet. A post-dinner program featured acts from multiple communities and a closing dance. The event raised 222.75 with expenses totaling 302.43 leaving a 30.12 balance from prior funds.
Coach John Dunckel announces the start of spring football and track practice at the high school. Both programs run concurrently to condition players for football and to prepare for track meets, with plans to schedule eleven-man grid games in the fall against nearby towns. Twenty six football suits issued and four or five more suitless for track, with many football players set to join spring track meets after grid practice ends.
