The Shelby campaign to create a new county grows stronger with Daniel McKay hired to advocate for division. The proposed county, Toole, would include parts of Teton County north of the Marias and three townships from Hill County. Officials expect a final decision within about three weeks.
Lake Basin residents Charles Martin and Jed Linder traveled to Power then returned Sunday. Several Chateau visitors stopped by including Wm Harris Grover Torgey and Phil Cole and wife with D L Sadler. Crossen hosted a birthday dinner for Mr Crossen on March 17. A dance drew a large crowd at W J Crittense's Friday. Zimmerman registered voters Monday while others ran errands and checked on horses and grinding work with a portable feed grinder.
The Arizona legislature selected Marcus A. Smith and Henry J. Ashurst as U S senators. A British wage bill passed Commons by a large majority. The Allen gang in Hillsville Va is being surrounded. Arizona governor spent a night in prison. A McCurtain Oklahoma mine explosion entombed over a hundred miners with twenty four rescued. Maine remains laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. New York primaries favored Taft with Indiana primaries and state convention also backing the president.
County clerk B C Garrett says school election registration in the county will reach about 2 100 and likely exceed it. About 350 voters registered for town elections in Conrad Cut Bank Valier and Shelby.
A large gathering met in the courthouse basement to reorganize the Chateau cornet band. Forty five attendees pledged to join and choose instruments, with each member to provide an instrument. no leader chosen yet. Active practice to start once instruments are secured.
With the Vaughn to Augusta rail work halted, Great Northern may seek a new pass across the mountains. Chateau country hopes Teton pass becomes the feasible western route. Local work studies maps and talks with experts, promising a shorter route than Sun River.
Letter explains federal rules on leave of absence from homestead entries for irrigated lands. It notes that time absent under the 1910 act is not credited toward residence, but reestablishing residence before water is available allows credit in final proof. The Montana state central committee meeting at the Grandon hotel in Helena endorsed President Taft strongly. Resolutions praised Taft while Roosevelt supporters pursued a preferential primary plan that failed 26 to 11. May 16 was set for the Taft convention in Livingston with no opposition.
Rules for stock brands printed by the Acantha guide stockmen. Brands recorded before June 1 1911 must be re recorded by Nov 1 1912 or become open to others. Re recording must reflect the recorded name and the position on the records. Fee is 252 per brand. Transferred records require the former owner or heirs signature before two witnesses. Transfers or recordings after June 1 1911 need not be re recorded. Transfer fee is $2. Send old certificate number if possible or a drawing of the brands. Mrs Smith announces a spring millinery opening with a full stock of pew hats and fashionable styles. The event occurs Saturday afternoon March 30 and invites all ladies in and near town to view the new creations in a social gathering atmosphere.
Governor Edwin L. Norris will address Chateau and surrounding area at the county courthouse Friday afternoon in a non partisan event. The program likely centers on good roads or Montana boosting with possible remarks on roads by W B George of Billings. A cross party committee from the local democratic club will run the event and a large crowd is expected.
The Montana State College winter school of agriculture closed its sessions for the year with 65 students from across the state. Three completed the three year course and received diplomas. A stock judging contest saw Melvin Johnson of Dupuyer top first year scores with 203 and awarded a watch. Johnson is son of I M Johnson, a Dupuyer resident.
A rascot business visitor Dutton S Wiprud toured the Electric City. J M Wowanach showcased horseback riding last Saturday. Landseekers arrived daily, Mr Sollid busy. Mr Albright returned to Great Falls Saturday. A Miller's hall ball drew strong attendance with Argall at the piano. A free ball at Miller's on Friday March 29 hosted by Bowen and Argill. Ringen and Whitacre were recent visitors to Great Falls. Dutton boys anticipate warm weather ball games and have been practicing.
The Acantha congratulates Joseph Whetston editor of Brady Whetstone on his marriage last week at Billicys to a North Dakota girl.
The Augusta Road Halls work on the Vaughn to Augusta railroad is stopped as Great Northern cannot persuade reclamation engineers to shift dam sites for the Sun river project. Dam location would raise railroad grade by about 300 feet, hindering progress. Efforts to add three dams failed and no settlement was reached.
State News notes rising socialist influence in Helena while Montana wool contracts top 0.75 million pounds at 18 cents. Butte miners renew a strike despite socialist opposition as state flags are placed at the Panama Pacific Exposition and plans for a railroad to Yellowstone surface. Obituaries report the deaths of G B Blackburn and John J M Neill. Great Falls land office upholds residency criteria in a contest involving an insane entrant.
The annual meeting of the forest officers of the Lewis and Clark national forest held Thursday to Saturday last week was hailed by Missoula district office representatives as highly successful. District and assistant district rangers plus local staff and guests attended, with a banquet at the Beaupre and a display of telephone construction demonstrations. The meeting reviewed timber sales plans for the coming year as forest activity and sales are expected to rise. continued on page 8.
