County Superintendent Inez Eckford announced the June apportionment totaling 11,464.72 for grade schools and 12,080.03 for high schools with 898.27 designated for libraries. High schools receive 7,304.79 at Teton, 2,409.97 at Dutton, and 2,365.27 at Power, based on enrollment figures.
Chas. M. Blackman aged about 79 was brought back to Teton county by Sheriff J L Billings after Cascade county dropped charges over an alleged theft. He was committed to the poor farm, left, then appeared at the Harry Odenwald place seeking haying work before authorities recaptured him Monday.
Envoy Arthur J. Packer of the Salvation Army headquarters in Butte spent last weekend and the early part of this week in Chateau. He is an authorized financial representative for Montana, a state he has lived in for 50 years with 11 years in Salvation Army work.
New budget rules for county high schools take effect July 1 under a state plan. Inez Eckford outlines per pupil allocations and maximums, with Teton high at 58.488 percent of funds and Dutton Power adjusting to 21.4413 percent. A nationwide wheat allotment and processing tax will fund farmer bonuses to reduce 20 percent acreage.
Oscar Joanis, formerly of Choteau, died near Deer Lodge Montana after a wire reported he dropped dead about 65 miles north of Deer Lodge. He worked at Chateau Mercantile Co. with S. T. Wiprud, later ran Cash & Carry and Stop and Shop groceries, and was a member of Choteau Lodge No. 44 A F and A M. His wife died circa 1929. he had no children and was about 59 years old.
An Associated Press report from Seattle notes Ray R. Porter, a Bynum merchant, filed a superior court action to regain custody of his daughters Dorothy May and June13, custody awarded to their mother Mrs. Gertrude Porter after a 1931 Great Falls divorce. He alleges the mother claimed a Bremerton lucrative business, later described as a beer joint where the elder daughter worked. the place was raided by federal officers on March 3, 1935.
Miss Doris Halverson hosted a bridge dinner last Friday at her home with two tables in play. Mary Sulgrove won high score and Ethel Morgan low score. Miss Alice Thrasher received a guest prize as other guests included Charlotte Looney Waneta Price Hazel Upman and Evelyn Upman.
C S McDonald led Choteau golfers with 85 at the Oil City tournament in Shelby earning a cup. A Choteau caravan including Mrs Baillie Miss Katherine MacDonald J J Hannan C D McDonald Clarence Looney B I Packer Clint Core J B Conlin and Jim Broderick attended. About 100 entries were reported with several Havre club wins.
Kenneth Mervin Jaeck drew a two year penitentiary term after pleading guilty to burglarizing the Ringem store at Dutton. Chicago-area mortgage and civil case notes appear, including two divorce decrees Angela Marianno vs Mario Marianno and Kenneth Pike vs Zelma Pike, plus three judgments totaling $962.08 with interest and costs. A court order allowed the law firm of Molumby, Busha and Greenan 20 days to amend the Pridham vs Tarrant and Wheeler auto collision suit.
The marriage of Alta Cohoe Ledgerwood to C C Ysland was reported with May 27 ceremony in Tacoma. The couple reside in Cathlamet where Ysland runs a wholesale business. Ledgerwood formerly taught in Montana and at Bellingham Normal College before teaching in Longview. Her daughters Alice and Marilyn Ledgerwood will depart July 4 for Cathlamet.
Ed Savik of Savik & Larson imported Prince Domino 59th a 13 month old Hereford sire for their herd in Chateau. The calf came from W. A. Crawford-Frost of Nanton Alberta who has led Calgary Hereford sales with top average consignments five years straight. Hoover & Stephenson of Great Falls own a half interest in Prince Domino 32nd, the sire of Prince Domino 59th, with grand sire Prince Domino 9th. Savik noted Alberta’s heat harmed crops during their Canada trip.
A Conoco Travel Bureau bus toured Chateau Monday evening with Robt. M. Stack in charge and Jos. A. Dutton Jr. piloting. Accompanying officials spoke at the Taylor garage before the bus headed for Glacier Park and the Logan Pass route.
Alex Burrell of this city heads the Montana Silver association membership drive. The organization lists state senators T. J. Walker J. L. Campbell Elmer Holt W. R. Church and representatives Jos. Metlen Sidney M. Logan and E. G. Toomey as officers with Charles R. Brazier as secretary. The group promotes restoring silver in the U S monetary system and coordinating industry efforts to support silver use, aiming to create employment across mining timber oil coal and related sectors. Membership is funded by selling silver medallions.
H EB Adams reports Glacier Park is active after a weekend visit. Work this year includes graveled Roosevelt highway from Lubec to near Summit and a new park entrance road to Lubec. Kirkpatrick & Son hold the contract with horse labor likely. Indians from the reservation are gathering to work with horse and man labor.
Hot weather prompts Katharine Mac Donald, chair of Chateau County Club's women's program committee, to extend the qualifying rounds for the ladies tombstone tournament handicap. The final limit is set for this coming Sunday, with three scores required for handicap calculation.
Principal A B Guthrie reports Miss Winona Gitchel of Teton high, in her first year at Northern Montana College Havre, earned five A grades in the spring quarter. Earlier year reports note her singularly fine student record. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jay Gitchel of Pendray and holds a 4 H club scholarship from the county.
Farmers from Teton county crowded the city park for the fourth annual Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union picnic. Businessmen and Lions club joined to support the event as free coffee and a public program highlighted a keynote by J. T. Kelly of Castagne, urging cooperative marketing and farm relief.
The new city building progresses rapidly with interior plastering and exterior stucco underway. Gus Prazier of Great Falls started the plastering and is assisted by Earle and Emmett Jackman, who expect to finish today as the fire department siren is moved. The front features tapestry brick and pilasters.
Otto Wagnild reports from J A Scollard that there will likely be a substantial scale down in debts as farmers can offer cash for settlement. Loans up to 5000 are secured by farm mortgages and may not exceed 75 percent of appraised value. No principal payments for three years if not in default. Continued on Page 8.
