The city of Chateau completed automatic controls for pumping water from the pump house to storage tanks on airport hill. The system turns on the motor when tank levels drop, reducing manual trips and improving safety.
The Sun River Range Management tour returns Monday June 19 starting at 9 am at the Gordon Young ranch entrance between Chateau and Augusta. Ranchers will view age 1965 range seeding plots, Sun River Elk Range, and the A B Cobb ranch with Mel Morris as primary speaker. Specialists from U S Forest Service Fish and Game and Soil Conservation Service will accompany the group. An optional final stop covers winter browse transects in Hannan Gulch. A second tour may be held in the Bynum Dupuyer area later.
Elmer Erickson of Chateau was named vice president of the Montana Clerks of District Court Association at the Missoula convention in the county courthouse. Other officers include Margaret Seines Polson president Hardin E Todd Billings secretary Vivian S Hall Shelby treasurer and Roger J Barnaby Wibaux on the executive board. The two day meeting heard reports on office procedures and legislative gains improving clerk of court and county offices. Ken neth Haker and Maureen Black wed at Stanford with Black of Seattle present.
Ray Anderson of Choteau escaped with minor bruises after his truck rolled onto its side off Farmington road north of Chateau. A water pond near the Depner farm nearly submerged him. Clark Inbody and Glen Inbody aided, lifting the vehicle with a tractor and freeing Anderson. The accident happened on a soft shoulder at about 10 mph with little vehicle damage.
The 22nd annual American Legion rodeo in Chateau on July 4 features top stock by Reg Kesler and national finals experience, with Lyle Otness as chairman. July 3 opens with a quarter horse show, July 4 parade and $100 prize float contest, and a grand fireworks finale. Bill Holt of Missoula will emcee. many cowboys expect to compete. Donations for fireworks are requested at Bob's Ford Sales or via Mrs. Bob Dellwo.
Cold wet weather slows opening day swim at Chateau pool with 59 swimmers versus 225 last year. All programs canceled Monday. lifesaving and water safety classes begin Tuesday, with schedule details and a full slate of July and August meets planned for the local Lions Club team.
More than 70 contestants from about 20 towns compete in Choteau on June 17 and 18. Events include barrel racing pole bending cow cutting breakaway roping and calf bull riding bareback and saddle bronc for boys. Queen contest crowns rodeo queen at Saturday park dance. Winners advance to state competition later this summer.
The Chateau Lions Club will run a summer swim program starting Monday June 26 with make-ups in early August. Advanced beginners meet 9 10 am on Mon Wed Fri. novice beginners 10 11 am. intermediate fish club Fridays 11 am 12 pm. advanced flying fish and shark candidates 9 1030 am Tue Thu. Dutton youngsters 1030 am noon Tue Thu. adults and high schoolers 7 9 pm Mon Wed. open public swim 2 430 pm daily with 430 5 pm lifesaving practice. pool open 7 9 pm nightly except Sunday with Monday Wednesday grade schoolers excluded. No advance registration. season ticket required for any formal instruction. Season pass costs grade school 4 high school 5 adults 6 family 15.
Montana Highway Patrol reports three crashes this week. Timothy Seaton, 19, Fort Shaw, was in a June 10 collision near Choteau with six passengers. juveniles faced alcohol charges and Seaton a reckless driving count. June 12 near Fairfield, Smith Whitman, 25, Fairfield, collided after a curve, with chest injuries and licensing citations. A Great Falls truck, Kenneth Lords, 23, rolled near Pendray, dairy loss total, Beatrice Foods shipment damaged.
Mrs Lee Cynthia Jean Hamer 57 died Friday in Choteau after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Choteau Methodist Church with Rev C Fred Crowe officiating. Burial followed at Choteau cemetery. Survivors include her husband Lee Hamer a son Gary Russell and daughter Sharon Guse among eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mrs. James Dellwo won second in the women’s championship flight at the Pondera Invitational Golf tournament in Conrad Sunday. Mrs. Chuck McDonald took first, Mrs. Jack Slanger of Chateau was third, Jim Dellwo was fourth in the men’s fifth flight, with Jack Slanger and Dave Shannon also participating for Chateau.
The Montana Rural Letter Carriers Association and Auxiliary held their annual gathering in Great Falls June 11 to 13. Outgoing president D O Moulton presided and will be succeeded by Mrs Eldon Jones of Lewistown, reportedly the only woman state association president in the U S. More than 100 carriers attended, with District No 4 hosting duties and Harry Stott of Byran leading that district.
Jaycees of Montana gather at the Cornell Hotel on Sunday June 11 with State President Don Bianchi and officers including International Director Don Pimperton National Director Glen Roberts Executive Vice President Gary Baden and State Vice President Eldo Raph The event featured leadership training a video from the 1965 National Convention and the creation of a salaried executive vice president role for Gary Baden to promote Jayceeism.
Fire crews responded to an early morning scare at the Teton County Rest Home after a flash fire in the dumbwaiter believed caused by nearby lightning. Fuses blew and wiring were charred, prompting an inspection and brief power outage on the east side of Main Street. Montana Power restored service within minutes.
Teton County Sheriff AL Becker announced the retirement of deputy Duard Pollock after four years under Becker. Pollock and his wife, former Augusta teacher Mrs Pollack, plan winters in the south. Ron Nelson is named to replace Pollock, with shifts assigned for the department now including Hollar, Sargent, Cunningham Jr., and Arp.
Donations to the fireworks fund continue as 20 more names join the donor list. Contributions accepted through July 4 at Bob's Ford Sales or with Mrs. Bob Dell no. This year’s surplus will roll into next year’s fund. Donors include Gladys Yeager and several local businesses such as American Legion Club and Teton Abstract.
