Sh teers fall in the Choteau vicinity with over an inch measured at Choteau boosting hopes for ranges and crops. County Extension Agent Ray Kelly says the emergency status is eased but more rain is needed to reach deeper soils and improve grain heads.
The American Legion and Chateau Chamber of Commerce boost the 4 July parade prize fund to 300 with a 100 grand prize for commercial floats. Second and third prizes rise to 60 and 40, with new fourth and fifth prizes of 25 and 15. Fireworks donations continue as fundraising seeks over 200 more dollars before July 4. Parade entries encouraged via page 8 blank form.
Chateau's Babe Ruth team schedules four evening games next week starting with Power tonight at Chateau Field. Cut Bank visits Saturday for two games, Dutton Tuesday June 17, and Shelby Thursday June 19, with first games around 6 30 p m and 3 p m start for Saturday. Chateau beat Brady 33 1 with Brady pitcher injured early and Choteau piling up 22 hits using four pitchers. Tuesday Choteau Babe Ruth defeated Fairfield 6 3 as Whealy earned the win and Stenson took the loss. Chateau rallied in the sixth and final frames as Fairfield led 3 0.
Glen Stott of Great Falls and formerly of Chateau was injured when his spray plane struck a power line near Interstate 15. He remains in traction with vertebra damage and broken ribs. witness Stewart Morrill helped rescue him as flames engulfed the cockpit. Two pilots from Stephens Spray Service assisted after the crash.
Joseph F Higgins Jr district ranger on the Teton Ranger District is moving to the Lochsa Ranger District in Kooskia Idaho The transfer takes effect June 29 Higgins a New York City native earned a forestry degree from the University of Maine in 1958 He will relocate with his wife and five children to Kooskia in late June
Bert and Betty Corey open their KOA Kampground with an open house planned Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. The facility offers 38 state access, 75 unit capacity, 16 mobile home hookups, showers, laundry, dumping stations, and on site shop for dairy products sundries and souvenirs. An official KOA representative will attend.
The Choteau Lions Club pool opens for its 37th season after repainting and repairs. Season tickets are sold at the pool office Rex's Thriftway and by Lions members, with pricing for grade school, high school, adults, and family. The first activities include a competitive swim team organizational session on June 10 ahead of meets June 28 29 and safety courses June 16 27.
A group of motel operators along Highway 89 and Inter-Park Inc officials met the Choteau Chamber of Commerce to discuss promoting travel from Yellowstone to Glacier National Parks. Inter-Park seeks broad member support and town cooperation to lure tourists to stay longer and visit area attractions. Ray Kelly described a slide program to showcase local attractions and urged citizen participation to sustain summer outreach efforts.
Rex Manuel of the Teton County ASC committee announced price support loan service fees will rise. Commodity loan interest remains about 3 percent, while per loan fees increase to 8 dollars for on farm stored goods and 4 dollars for warehouse stored commodities to cover county office administrative costs.
Pastor Marlow Engberg of Trinity Lutheran Church Chateau has been awarded a Board of American Missions scholarship to attend the Great Plains Church Leadership School at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. The July program, titled Rural America in Crisis, gathers church leaders nationwide and Trinity Lutheran will subsidize travel costs.
Rev D Smith will leave Chateau United Methodist Church after Sunday service on June 15 and begin as pastor at Hillview United Methodist Church in Boise Idaho next week. He transferred from the Montana Conference after attending the Oregon Idaho Annual Conference in Salem. The family will move to Boise with son Rockwell who graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. The Smith address is 8525 Ustick Road Boise Idaho 83702. Daughter Heidi will spend the summer with sister Lynn Thomas in Salmon Idaho.
Ward B Carr a pro golfer from East Glacier will teach summer golf lessons at Chateau Country Club if enough interest is shown. Contact Jack Slanger or Bob Armstrong to sign up. A party to honor Mr and Mrs Robert Erickson and Mr and Mrs Ed Schiller is scheduled for 8 p m Saturday May 14 with invitations extended to friends. Erickson works for the City of Helena. Schiller has unspecified plans.
The Chateau Fire Department extinguished a grass blaze in a vacant lot across from Teton Cleaners last Friday afternoon. The flames burned trees and debris but caused no damage and the cause remains unknown.
The Choteau A A U track squad returned from Missoula with six medals and ten place awards at the 10th annual Montana Boys Junior Olympics. Greg Newell led the team with a gold silver and bronze, tying the state AAU record in the 100 yard dash. Other medals and strong showings came from Pat Whealy, Greg Crabtree, Mike Whealy, Rich Allen, Dick Dale, Pat Scott and Rich Nordhagen, while relay teams failed to place.
Dorlores Colburg, state superintendent, announced $9,525,712 in final 1968-69 foundation program payment, bringing total state equalization aid to $23,775,841. January had a 60 percent first payment. final 40 percent is now sent to county treasurers. Teton County received $54,639, totaling $136,597 for the year.
