St Lawrence Seaway Plan Aims to Open Lakes to Ocean Trade
A plan to build a 2350 mile St Lawrence seaway would allow most of the world's merchant ships to reach Great Lakes ports. The $266 million project includes a deepened canal system, locks, and hydro power near Massena New York, with completion in about four years. It would boost Midwest trade, defense capacity, and aluminum production by expanding export routes to Atlantic ports.
