General Chorpening Retires After 40 Years With Corps
Major General Claude H Chorpening, longtime Corps of Engineers officer, retires June 30 1956 after more than four decades of service. A farewell review with 13 gun salute was held at the Engineer Center Fort Belvoir. He earned the Taeguk Order and Uchi Medal from Korea and led Civil Works and flood control programs in Washington 1951 54. He and his wife Mary Sulgrove plan a motor trip to the Dakotas and Montana after retirement.

Field Mass At Augusta This Sunday
The annual Field Mass sponsored by St. John's Parish in Fairfield and St. Joseph's Parish in Chateau with their missions will be held next Sunday in Augusta at 11 am in the town park. Rev. Joseph Mackin of Carrol College will preach the sermon. Fortified by church officials from Chateau, Rev. Thomas J. Gannon will serve as celebrant and Rev. Joseph Mackin as deacon.
