A Fairfield man, Al Bateman, was elected president of the Montana School Bus Drivers Assn at a Billings meeting. He succeeds Jack Moe of Ramsey. Other officers include William F. Sheehan Baker first vice president Durwald Quigley Harlowton second vice president and George Foreman Anaconda secretary treasurer. Moe De Waine Meyer and Ray Teague Clinton were named directors.

Two Oil Wells Start Drilling West of City
Amerada Petroleum began a Madison test well three miles west of Choteau on the Choteau Cattle Company ranch. Drilling contractor Fitzpatrick Co. targets about 2900 feet on an anticlinal nose after seismic work on the lease. Wheat quotas extended after nationwide vote July 20
Nationally approved quotas continue for the 1957 wheat crop with a 2.00 per bushel price support and a unit rate of 60 percent for Acreage Reserve payments. Montana voters favored quotas at over 94 percent, with Teton county at 802 to 55 in support. 228,737 votes for and 32,758 against nationwide. Producers must comply with farm allotments to receive price support.

Iris Hughes Crowned State Girl Champion at Wolf Point Rodeo
Iris Hughes daughter of Mr and Mrs Jim Hughes of Chateau won all around cowgirl honors at the 1956 Montana High School Rodeo in Wolf Point placing first in barrel race and pole bending. She is Montana state secretary of the Montana High School Rodeo Association and qualifies for the National Rodeo at Reno Nevada August 10 11. Other Chateau winners include Maxine Yeager second in girls cow cutting Jimmy Beadle second in boys cow cutting and Howard Yeager tied for fourth in boys cow cutting.

Chan Ferguson Resigns City Manager Post in Great Falls
Chan Ferguson of Great Falls resigns this week from his post as city manager for Phillips Petroleum to devote time to farming and real estate interests in the area. He began in oil sales with Continental Oil in 1923, joined Home Oil in 1939, and led Great Falls during Home Oil’s absorption by Phillips in 1947. He is married to the former Clara Ferris and the couple live in Great Falls with local farming and real estate holdings.

Fire truck diverted after grass fire near Choteau
The Teton County rural fire truck from Choteau was called to Pendray Monday night but turned back before arrival as the call was not needed. A grass fire at the Wag Halverson place was then reported. it was under control, though the warning prompted the call.

Dutton Old Timer Succumbs After Hard Open Range Work
Fred Trebesch a 79 year old Dutton rancher and early homesteader died Wednesday at a Great Falls hospital after a lingering illness. Born near Springfield Minnesota he moved to the area in 1910 with his two sons and wife Anne who died five years ago. He rode immigrant cars with gear and animals to settle on open land then hauled water and materials to build a barn and home. He drove a school bus and freighted supplies while drought tested the family, leaving five sons and a daughter farming today.

Severe hail and rain lash Choteau area causing crop losses
Two severe storms hit Choteau with .59 inches of rain and lightning. One week earlier hail west of Dutton to east of Dutton damaged crops, with losses of front two to five bushels per acre in spots and heavy losses elsewhere. A single 300 acre spring wheat field was wiped out by a later hail storm between Dutton and Power.

Truck and Tractor Plunge Down Augusta Hill
A truck carrying a John Deere tractor rolled down Gilman hill near Augusta after a driver failed to secure the load. The tractor broke loose and was crushed when the truck toppled onto it. John Beadle Jr. received a citation for improper loading and reckless driving. Cliff Morgan swerved to avoid the runaway vehicle.

Little League Tourney Set For Sunday at Chateau
An all day four team Little League tournament is set for Sunday August 5 at Chateau with two noon games Yellows versus Blues and Reds versus Greens at the grade school and city park diamonds. The 3 30 pm games pit the noon losers and winners respectively, each six innings. Regular games resume next week. The Fairfield softball tournament between Schroetier and Chateau Vets has been cancelled.

Schroeder Hardware Wins 1956 Chateau Softball Title
Schroeder Hardware clinched first place in the Chateau league with only one loss, defeating VFW 8 to 7 in a late season clash. Earlier in the week Schroeder beat VFW 12 to 8 in a practice game as the leaders finished the season strong.
