James Keef has taken the role of superintendent at Chateau Schools. He earned a B S in education in 1960 from Western Montana College and an M S in 1962. He pursued further studies at the University of Montana and earned an Ed D in 1976. He taught science in Dillon and Elgin before becoming principal of Shelby High School in 1973.

80 Year Old Gilbert Agee Dies in Chateau
Gilbert Agee, 80, died Thursday July 7 at Teton Memorial Hospital. Born in Missouri he moved to Miles City in 1910 and to Chateau in 1916 during Milwaukee Railroad track work. He married Mary Ellen Nelson in 1914. survivors include six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services were held July 9 at Burns Chapel in Chateau.

Kerrigan Installed as New Pastor at St. Joseph’s Choteau
Rev. John P. Kerrigan arrived in Choteau to assume the pastorate of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, replacing seven year pastor Fr. James Gannon. Born in Butte, he was educated at Carroll College and St. Edwards Seminary and served as pastor at multiple Montana churches. City Council Indicates Big Levy Increase in Preliminary Budget
City officials project a sharp rise in the general fund and total property taxes for Chateau as a July 19 budget vote looms. Police cuts are the sole possible levy reduction while other funds push overall millage toward 65 mills from 50.8. A straw ballot asks residents to choose between maintaining the four man police force with 24 hour service or reducing to night watchman and part time daytime service. The budget spans police protection, streets, parks, library, recreation, air maintenance, swimming pool, firemen’s disability, SID revolving fund, and related expenditures with year to year changes.
