C M Woods of Woods & Son Conrad contractors described repairing the Fairfield canal break as a major effort. A washout two miles east and half a mile south of Fairfield created a 200 foot long hole, with 306 yards of screening gravel and about 5 000 yards of earth fill used for cement work. 200 to 300 workers, CCC help, horses, tractors, and a steam shovel backed the project as water was rerouted to speed repairs and expected to be back in the canal by Tuesday.
