A Montana legislator condemns backward budgeting and proposes tax reform to fund education. He cites a $10 million junior college appropriation defeated by two votes and argues for shifting college funding to the general fund. He criticizes media coverage and supports executive reorganization while backing a referendum on sales tax and a district realignment moving Teton County to the Eastern Congressional District.
Supt. Robert Gormley urges Shelby residents to order adult reserved tickets now for the district basketball tournament set for February 25 26 and 27. Tickets cost 6 each and will cover all games. advance orders must be sent by the school soon. Student tickets will be plentiful.
A community Easter Cantata is planned for Palm Sunday April 4 in the Chateau High School auditorium under the direction of Lloyd Reynolds. Rehearsals start February 4 Thursdays at 7 15 p m in the Methodist Church. All Chateau and surrounding area residents with singing talent are invited to participate.
Members of the Teton County Democrat Women's Club will meet Monday February 1 at 12 30 p m at the Club Cafe in Dutton. All members are urged to attend.
Police Chief Leon Gollehon reported 167 citations issued in 1970, about 50 fewer than 1969. The department logged 28 accidents, 43 ambulance runs, and noted speeding led violations with 37 citations. Other top offenses included careless driving, failure to stop at a sign, driving without a license, and beer possession.
The health planning meeting planned for tonight at Moose Hall is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.
The third annual American Simmental Association gathering occurred in Denver January 14 to 16 with Jesse Malone Sr. of Chateau presiding. European delegates and U S and Canadian attendees heard talks on performance testing quarantine stations and research as cross bred cattle fetched top prices at the first international sale. Malone completed his term as president and moved to the board of trustees.
Chateau Jaycee Bosses Night feted Dr. Bill Patton Mayor James Dellno Stan Rathman and Jerry Herman. Patton received the Distinguished Service Award with top national implications. Herman won Outstanding Young Educator. Rathman earned Boss of the Year along with multiple prior honors.
Funeral services for E. C. Al Hensley 64 a Chateau businessman were held Thursday at St. Josephs Catholic Church with burial in Chateau Cemetery and military graveside rites. Survivors include widow Claire daughters Helena Grace Hope Maria Mary Claire son Franklin Charles and siblings.
The Women’s City Association bowling league will meet on Tuesday February 2 at A and E Lanes. All teams in the early shift should be ready to start at 6 45 to allow time between shifts for the meeting.
Chateau business leaders are urged to attend the Chamber of Commerce banquet at the Lions Club hall. A turkey dinner starts at 6 39 p.m. Tickets are 2 50 at the bank and local shops. John Conatser of Moore Montana has taken over as lessee of Greenwood's Enco Service Station in Chateau. He began operating the station on January 21 after two years at Eddie's Corners. Conatser, born in Glasgow, is a Moore High School graduate and studied business at Eastern Montana College in Billings. An open house is planned later. Rodney Greenwood, the former operator, urges customers to continue patronizing the Enco Station under the new owner.
A five day smoking cessation clinic will run in the board room at Teton Memorial Hospital starting Sunday January 31 at 7 30 pm. Sponsored by the Seventh day Adventist Church the program has found success nationwide. For details contact Arnold Johnson at the hospital.
The Conrad Cowboys surged to first in District 3B by beating Choteau 71 57, ending a three way tie. Choteau then fell to fourth after a 62 54 loss to Shelby, as Cut Bank and Shelby chased second and third.
