Environment Drives Montana Legislature On Strip Mining
Environment is the Montana legislatures principal issue as it meets to discuss reclamation of land from which coal has been removed. Proposals include severe fines up to five thousand dollars a day for strip mine operators and calls for halting all mining until land air and water pollution concerns are solved. The debate covers broader energy policy and hearings for reclamation rules with industry urging targeted, site specific protections and open end yearly reviews rather than blanket bans.
