Jaycees Boost Library Drive and New Building Opening

The Jaycees exceeded the fundraising goal with a $13,854 gift to the library board in March for purchasing the former Villager building. The building was bought, redecorated, and set for an opening, but Nixon era funding delays slowed federal matching funds. After funds arrived the project moved forward. the old library was sold in summer and a book mobile served patrons until cold weather. Now books are checked out in the new library rear rooms as interior work awaits approval.

Skyline Lodge Retirement Center gains federal funds

The Skyline Lodge board of directors learned in December that federal funds totaling 870000 were approved for the 60 apartment unit project in Chateau. Construction hopes target spring 1971 as paperwork nears completion and local impact on the economy is anticipated.

Montana Hospitals Seek Delay On Sprinkler Rules

Montana Senate Joint Resolution No. 1 heard Monday in Helena urging a one year delay on automatic sprinkler mandates for hospitals and a review of fire protection alternatives. Hospital administrator Jim Humble and board member Bob Swartzel testified for delay. nursing home group sought amendment to include facilities.

Al Heckerman named new SCS head at Choteau office

Al Heckerman was recently named district conservationist at the Choteau Soil Conservation Service office. He arrives from Big Sandy where he held the same post for four years, and has worked in Glasgow and Winnett. A Bell native, Heckerman is a South Dakota State College graduate and Air Force veteran. He and his wife Dorothy have a son Neil and daughter Jody. He has led the Choteau office since November 1 and recently moved his family to town.

Barribal Shows Golf Form In Sunny South

Fred Barribal’s game has improved in the sun south, with a third eagle of the year. He holed his second shot on the 365 yard par 4 at Sun City Arizona Country Club. Earlier eagles came on the 285 yard par 4 eighth hole with an 8 iron and on the par 15th with a 3 wood from 160 yards.

Choteau Jaycees circulate petitions to place a hospital district issue on Teton County ballots. Forty percent? No, thirty percent of registered taxpayers must sign. Signing merely allows a vote, not approval. Jaycees urge accurate signatures matching registration and offer to answer questions about the proposal.

Senior Citizens Hold January Birthday Party

Thirty members of the Senior Citizens Club braved cold weather Saturday night to attend the January birthday party. President Ted Halvorson said turnout was good given conditions and after the party, cards were played.

Captain Pedersen Decorated for Valor in Vietnam

Army Captain Lloyd W. Pedersen son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd S Pedersen of Collins received the Distinguished Flying Cross at Fort Rucker Alabama for bravery during a Vietnam helicopter mission. He landed under heavy fire to save two wounded soldiers and then led extractions before returning to combat. The 27 year old officer now serves as evaluation officer in the director of instruction division. He has earned 11 Air Medals and is a 1961 Chateau High School graduate with a 1965 BS from Montana State University and is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Schools to Receive Financial Assistance in Helena

Superintendent Dolores Colburg announced that $17,701,076 in state equalization aid will be paid this week to elementary and secondary schools. This first of two annual payments covers about 60 percent of the total, funding the Foundation Program from individual income tax and general fund appropriations, with Teton County receiving $93,428.

AFS Tea Event Highlights Exchange Student Becky Ochoa

The AFS tea on Sunday January 17 runs 4 to 6 pm in the Chateau grade school cafeteria. The event invites local families to learn about hosting a foreign student for the 1971-72 year and offers Becky Ochoa a chance to meet the community. Becky, a Venezuelan student from near Caracas, is active in Chateau High School clubs and sports and can speak to groups.

Montana Jaycee President Stan Rasmussen of Harlem will headline the Bosses Night banquet on Wednesday January 20 at 630 p.m. at Jaycee hall. Awards include Boss of the Year Distinguished Service Senior Citizen and Outstanding Young Educator. Tickets are 2 dollars at the door.

Blood Drive Announced for Choteau Community

Blood program director Mrs. Grant Curtis urges Cho teau area residents to donate today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Choteau United Methodist Church. Aims for 65 pints, matching the 73 pint October total, as the second drawing of the fiscal year toward a 195 pint annual goal. Donors may snack afterward. Record Cold Sweeps County With Frigid Subzero Lows

Last weekend cold weather plunged the area with a low of 25 degrees below zero on Sunday night and -35 by Wednesday morning at Chateau airport. Snow depths range 12 to 18 inches, marking the season’s heaviest snowfall here. This marks the first extended deep freeze of the winter. Temperature and precipitation totals since January 1 are listed by the weather checking station.

19 Year Old Registrations Being Accepted

Secretary of State Frank Murray announces Montana counties must accept voter registrations from citizens over 19 or turning 19 before any election they vote in. The change follows a constitutional amendment approved by voters and became effective November 20, 1970, per the governor’s proclamation of the election results.

Filing for mayor councilman police judge and city treasurer are now open at the city office. Nominating petitions due by February 10 with a city election set for April. All offices up for two year terms. Salary details include councilman $12.50 per meeting rising to $50 monthly, mayor $100 rising to $200 monthly, police judge $75, treasurer $70.
