Fire destroys barn on Baker farm near Farmington

Last Friday afternoon a fire at the Charles Baker place east of Farmington demolished a barn and burned cattle and farm equipment. Sheriff Al Peterson's Teton county rural firefighting unit from Choteau and neighbors saved grain and feed, preventing spread to other buildings. Two calves perished, hay and harness burned, wheat largely saved, no insurance.

New Theater Opens In Dutton With Weekly Film Changes

The Dutton theater, owned by Carl Komamiski, opens this Sunday with shows at 6:15 and 8:15 as Bob Hopé stars in Sorrowful Jones. Weekly schedule includes changes Sunday Wednesday Friday with double features on Fridays and Saturdays. The unfinished cinder block building on main street houses the venue. Emil Schultz was the contractor.

Livestock Men Invited to Go On Feed Tour

Teton county livestock men including range operators and others interested in feeding are invited to a feeder tour next Monday Jan 9 in the Sun River valley. The group will depart Great Falls Rainbow Hotel at 9 am with stops at five sites west of Great Falls to view feeding operations for steers and jambs. Experts will lead discussions at each stop and a lunch at the Park hotel in Great Falls at 12:15 pm will precede a livestock feeding program.

Funeral for Merile Edward Rouse 4 in Power

Funeral services for Merile Edward Rouse aged four of Power were held Monday at 9:30 AM in the Catholic church with Rev. Russell Scheidler of Fairfield officiating. Burial followed in Dutton cemetery. Born June 26 1945 he died of diabetes and is survived by his mother Mrs Lucille Hilling Rouse and grandparents Mr and Mrs Thomas Hilling of Power along with numerous aunts and uncles.

Two Chateau Firemen Retired Under Pension Plan

H. B. Red Swanson and Lee Brown, longtime Chateau volunteers since 1922, retire from active duty to receive a monthly pension of 10 dollars under the town’s firemen pension fund. They are the first retirees under the program, with eligibility requiring 50 years of age and 20 years service. Swanson is a former captain and Brown recalls era from manual hose carts to the mill fire ten years ago. Both become honorary department members as the fund expands to future retirees.

Miss Dorothy Kessinger and George Hodgskiss Wed in Dec

Miss Dorothy Kessinger married George Hodgskiss on December 28. The bride wore a satin gown with net trim and carried talisman roses and a white Bible. the couple’s reception followed at the church parlors. The bride, a Simms graduate, and groom, a Choteau rancher, plan to reside near Choteau.

Weather Halts Donkey Basketball Game in Choteau

Donkey basketball was canceled in Choteau Tuesday night due to bad weather. The trained troupe based in Columbia Falls reported their donkeys were frozen and could not travel to Choteau for the scheduled game.

Bulldogs Drop Two Weekend Games

Choteau Bulldogs lost two home games against Simms and Valier last weekend. Simms edged Choteau 50 to 46 after a strong second half, and Valier defeated Choteau 55 to 43 on Friday. The pair of losses completed a rough stretch on the Choteau floor.

Annual Meeting Of Teton Memorial Hospital Set

The Teton Memorial Hospital association schedules its annual meeting for Monday night January 16 at 8 in the courthouse court room at Chateau. Officials say major project obstacles are resolved and a discussion of hospital operation will be held along with important business and the election of three directors. Choteau PTA plans fundraising to purchase uniforms for Choteau high school band before year end. Mrs C E Babe Russell named budget and finance committee chair. Wheels Win Over Legion In Home Game

The Chateau Wheels beat the Chateau Legion 65 to 27 after an early 13-5 lead and 36-14 at halftime. LaVerne Dahlin led with 24 points in the high school gym. Upcoming games include Valier vs Wheels and Augusta vs Legion at 7:15 PM with more matchups listed for the week.

Dutton Youth Wins Trip For 4 H Work

Vernon Laubach of Dutton is one of five Montana 4 H club boys awarded an Atwood Larson grain marketing tour. The trip covers an expense paid three day Minneapolis tour to observe grain facilities and markets. Laubach produced registered winter wheat and placed in the state agricultural demo contest.

Moose Leader Heilman to Speak at Choteau Moose Banquet

Herbert W. Heilman national director of sports activities for the Loyal Order of Moose will speak at the Choteau Moose lodge banquet and initiation next Tuesday night at Moose hall. He also will speak briefly to the Chateau Lions club the same night. Heilman is North Central college athletics director and a Moose lodge No. 400 member.

Choteau Smoke House Owner Returns From Rochester Operation

Bob Van Scherpenzeel proprietor of Bob's Smoke House in Choteau returns from Rochester Minnesota after a stomach operation. He arrived just in time and most of his stomach was removed. He was rushed to Great Falls then flown to Rochester where surgeons operated. He misses few local games and received a greeting card from the basketball Smoke Room Gang.

Elliott Reyer, who has led the census bureau in Choteau for two years, is reassigned to the Los Angeles office where he began work last Tuesday. His wife, who spent the holidays in Milwaukee, will join him in California.

Mercury Hits Minus 41 During Week

A bitter cold week drove the county to record lows with 41 degrees below zero on Tuesday. Daytime highs hovered near zero with -18 to -28 lows, then a brief warm spell rose to 18 above. Boiler water leakage forced Chateau High School to close in the afternoon while many rural schools remained closed for the week.
