Legislature Convenes With Broad 1973 Agenda in Montana
Montana lawmakers begin the 1973 session facing a heavy workload. The new constitution requires implementing roughly 70 drafted bills and reapportioning both House and Senate into single member districts. Officials consider local revenue shifts, a possible gross receipts tax, higher income tax, a doubled beer tax for local enforcement, and city fee authority for nonprofit institutions. The session marks Montana’s first annual meeting under the new system and runs about 60 days, with potential extensions.
