The Montana legislature approved a bill granting district court clerks near identical authority to probate judges. Frances Rosengren of Teton county joins peers to issue hearing notices, appoint appraisers, approve claims, handle accounts, and issue orders in probate and guardianship cases.
The Choteau Lions Club featured a patriotic cantata The Spirit of 76 performed by American Legion Auxiliary members in observance of Washington's Birthday. Dr E B Maynard chaired the program with a 85 minute overview of American history from Columbus to the Revolution. The event included a piano by Mrs K E Sturgis and performances by sopranos and altos, led by W W Smith who spoke on the cantata and Scouts and band funding discussions followed.
Te ton chapter of the American Red Cross schedules its annual meeting for Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock March 5. Miss Margaret W Nagle, chapter chairman, announces an officer election and reports reading. All Red Cross members are eligible to attend.
Chateau troop No. 51 plans a fundraising drive by selling Boy's Life subscriptions to cover a jamboree trip to Washington DC next August. Each Scout acts as a junior salesman in competitive units with 25 subscriptions earning a $3.75 bonus and a 25 percent commission. The package includes clubbing offers. a $1.00 price yields a 25 cent commission. Revenue targets cover travel subsistence and a new uniform, with total cost listed as $125 per boy.
The Woman's Club will present its annual music and poetry program next Tuesday afternoon March 5 at 3 o’clock in the grade school auditorium. Committee members in charge are Mrs. R. E. Nelson and Mrs. Marion Averill. Tea will follow, hosted by Mrs. E. J. Crary and committee. Performances include a double quartet, piano duet, vocal solo, cornet solo, and more with noted participants such as Miss Janet Aldrich and Mrs. Hanusa.
The Collins refinery will be dismantled and shipped to Yorkton Saskatchewan to be enlarged to 1000 barrels per day to process Cut Bank and Kevin Sunburst crude. Great West Refining Co led by W. D. Craig of Regina will oversee the move with Perry H. Withers as manager.
Carl Peterson served as county agent last spring before Fred Willson arrived. He met with C. G. Sheppard in Choteau and then moved to eastern drought relief work focused on cattle purchase and removal. Sheppard noted about 2 000 tons baled hay in Choteau and 450 tons at Bynum.
The Teton Bulldogs opened at Great Falls in the Class B District 10 tourney with a loss to Fort Benton and then dropped two consolation games to Dutton. Missing star Skip Ness with a foot injury, Augusta’s game also hurt their chances as Belt and Centerville advanced in a hard fought event.
The tenth annual Teton County farmers fun feed starts at 6 30 pm at Teton County High School. Home economics department led by Miss Evelyn Matmiller serves the ham dinner. Tickets sold to 500 due to high demand, with a community sing and announcements in the auditorium followed by a program and a dance in the gym. A new feature is a husband calling contest with a 35 point masculine appeal score on the card.
A GM built passenger bus with maroon and white livery test runs along the Great Falls Browning corridor on highway 87. The party includes Milwaukee officials and Great Falls coach line leaders. The schedule covers Great Falls to Browning with planned Glacier Park expansion and a future opposite-direction bus. Fare set at two cents per mile with a 1.20 dollar one way fare for the Great Falls Chateau leg.
J A Stubkjare operates a new blacksmith shop across the street from the former Highway garage site. He moved a crew to erect the building quickly to free space needed by Jos Knudtzon for his lumber business. Stubkjare recently developed a device for a duckfoot cultivator to prevent clogging and invites farmers to view it.
County Agent Fred Willson reports new data on Say's grain bug in Teton County and surrounding areas. Entomologist A Allen Mail of Montana State College finds sub zero temperatures do not halt the pests which concentrate in stubble and debris, urging field burning before spring activity.
Martha Fritts, a graduate beautician and licensed operator in Montana, will open a new beauty shop on the balcony of Rexall Drug store in Choteau. She moved here last fall from Tacoma Washington and has worked with Gladys Weaver at the Weaver beauty shop.
Great Falls insurance man E R Britten claimed he was robbed of 60 dollars after two men forced him from Bynum toward Great Falls. Investigations showed Britten had been drinking and was injured in prior fights. he admitted fabrication and received a reprimand.
Clayton Mainard and Elwood Pete Foster pleaded guilty to first degree burglary in J G Jackson's justice court. They were remanded to sheriff custody to await sentencing by District Judge R M Hattersley on March 15. Mainard posted a $1000 bail. They were charged with stealing wheat sold in Great Falls and Conrad.
Brady Aces lose 45 to 29 to the Choteau Racketeers in a Thursday return game. Racketeers led 14 to 5 after one quarter and 30 to 9 at halftime, then held off Brady as substitutions entered, with final scoring evenly spread late.
Funeral services for Mrs. W. A. Emerick of Chateau were conducted at 2 o clock in the local Methodist church. Rev. Edwin Dover led the service with Mrs. Dover singing and Edna K. Averill at the piano. Interment was in Chateau cemetery with pallbearers A H Doughty J L Gleason Lee Brown George Thompson M A King and E L Jourdonnais. Mrs. Emerick, born Julia Smith on August 4 1876 in Gainsville Georgia, lived in Stevensville and Chateau before settling in Great Falls, survived by husband W A Emerick two sons Louis DeNayer of Billings Edward DeNayer of Los Angeles and three grandchildren.
In Helena the House of Representatives struggles to act on many bills before the 10 day deadline to transmit to the Senate. The House rejected a unicameral legislature constitutional amendment, a gross income tax, a cigarette tax, and a two cent check tax. Bills approved for Senate transmission include highway patrol, real estate tax exemption under 2500, crude oil license tax, old age pensions, private liquor sales, public utility acts, state advisory council, separation of beer halls, and a chain store tax.
The Grove on the Rhode Island coast serves as the backdrop for a modern American family across three generations. The tale follows Brad Linda and Dickey from adolescence in 1909 to wartime return in 1919 and mature choices in 1929, set at the Waring family summer place. Proceeds from a Rexall food sale aid the library.
Rev. Fr. Wm. Curran, former associate pastor of St. Luke's Church, visited here from Thursday to Saturday last week. He now serves with St. Peter's parish at Anaconda.
