The Western Passenger Association, meeting in Chicago, warns no summer excursions will be run by western lines unless western legislatures stop agitating 2 cent fare bills. They lobby against a Iowa measure, arguing low settlement makes fare cuts uneconomical and could force passenger trains to operate at a loss.
Professor Matteucci of the Vesuvius observatory warns that by late March a newly discovered comet may touch the earth's atmosphere. He and his brother deem the danger potentially acute though brief, fearing atmospheric ignition and immediate destruction of life if the tail collides. He cites other notable solar phenomena connected to a recent large sun spot.
Attorney general opinions that county printing contracts by retiring boards may bind or void future boards. The opinion says bids are not required. a contract may be with any suitable paper published six months prior. It condemns locking in a term for the incoming board and voids if the paper lacked six months continuous publication. Relena Record.
Washington February 23 Conferees sign off on an Indian bill that opens the Blackfeet reservation by modifying the Dixon and Clark bills. Montana delegation and the commissioner of Indian affairs deem it satisfactory. The measure also authorizes leasing Fort Belknap lands near Harlem for beet sugar culture with a factory. The bill will become law in this form.
Jos Hirshberg and Co announces new season shirt waists for ladies arriving this spring and summer. Ladies are invited to visit and select from the new range.
In Butte on February 26, miners voted 2349 to 1068 to raise daily wages from 3.75 to 4.00. The change, effective May 1, is a request rather than a final demand, with no expected strike or shutdown. Development work will pause while mining continues.
Helena February 25. In Coburn Cattle Company vs S C Small Valley County treasurer the court reversed a prior ruling for $812.39 in cattle tax recovery. The 1300 head were free on the first Monday in March but the court did not award the plaintiff final judgment. Findings did not settle all issues of fact.
Postcards containing glass mica or similar substances will be barred from handling hereafter unless enclosed in envelopes. The new rule announced by Postmaster Owen aims to prevent injury to mail handlers and stems from formal instructions just received.
Butte residents hear a Congressional bill may raise second class post office salaries to first class levels. Carriers who filed resignations with Postmaster Irvin may refrain, awaiting Senate action. If enacted, increases could take effect July 1 and satisfy the union’s demands.
H A Jackson of Great Northern reports freight moving rapidly from St Paul to Helena and says cattle and sheep losses were overstated. He notes minimal winter losses, bright outlook, ample water, strong dry land farming prospects, and potential huge gains on irrigated land. He observes statewide support for a state immigration bureau and anticipates railroad cooperation.
Project engineer C. C. Cobb reports two miles of canal completed before winter stoppage. About 300 Indians and white foremen will return to work in spring to advance the canal, dam, and headworks, with a temporary dam and tunnel planned.
Helena reports Bell Telephone workers resume duties after a daily strike. A long conference between Bell officials and operator representatives led to a signed contract running to February 16, 1908. About nineteen operators received an average wage increase of 15 dollars.
George Raban and E L McDowell, expert accountants from Great Falls, conduct a careful audit of the Valley County treasurer's records. They report no discrepancies affecting the clerk and recorder, and describe the shoemaker’s office affairs as models of accuracy with no figures found wrong.
The list of uncalled letters includes Mrs. S. A. Hadley. Recipients should call for letters and say advertised and pay one cent. P. M. C. H. Deake notes.
Culbertson resident Walter Mathews a government commissioner and civil engineer writes in the Great Falls Tribune voicing fears his decrepit surveyors home project may not be built and praising Legislator McCunes pioneer home bill He recalls Montana's early landmarks from Benton Lake to Last Chance gulch and notes a rugged frontier past including mines stocks and irrigation plans.
In Washington on February 25 the agriculture appropriation bill featured a Fulton amendment barring new or enlarged forest reserves without Congress approval in Oregon Washington Idaho Montana Colorado and Wyoming. An additional $1,000,000 for forest reserve improvements passed without debate. Senator Beveridge proposed labeling requirements and shifted meat inspection costs to packers, with Warren signaling a point of order and Beveridge arguing opposition comes from packers who should pay.
