Trade day a hit as Chateau merchants launch monthly event

Chateau merchants inaugurated a monthly trade day with 24 business ads and a plan to improve. The first event drew broad public interest and organizers set March 5 for the next Saturday and February 21 for planning. Lions club trade extension sponsors expected public events to accompany future days.

Fire Claims Father and All Four Children in Valier Tragedy

Leon ard Johnson and his four children Mary 10 Marjorie 8 Sammy 3 Bennie 1 perished in a blaze that destroyed the Guardipee house in Valier. The mother and two other children were taken to Conrad hospital but expected to recover. The fire started when Leonard Johnson poured distillate to light the stove. a neighbor, Laurence Stillman, helped one daughter and Johnson escape before the house exploded. The family, WPA workers on relief, had lived in Valier 4 or 5 months after moving from Dupuyer.

Death of Edwin J. Crandall in Tolland Connecticut

Edwin J. Crandall 84 died at the Tolland home after a long illness. He served in the Connecticut state legislature and was a farmer and longtime community figure. Survived by his widow and 12 children. Born October 14, 1853. Funeral Friday. daughter Mrs. Jas T Robison will not attend.

County Considers Split Into Four High School Districts

A petition from the Dutton No. 28 school board to the county commissioners proposes dividing Teton County into four high school districts. Dutton would absorb seven districts, Power five, Fairfield four, and Chateau the remainder. A bonding plan for Fairfield seeks about 60 000 with a 30 000 WPA grant, with a Feb 16 hearing set.

Racketeers Hand Walier Independents First Defeat

The Chateau Racketeers defeated the Walier Independents 16 to 10 on the home court Friday night. Hamilton opened Chateau’s scoring as Valier chased from behind, holding a slight lead at half time. Five fouls were called and neither side scored on free throws. the Racketeers notch their second win after an earlier loss to Conrad.

Newman couple marks silver wedding anniversary

Neighbors in the Dupuyer and Pendroy communities gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Newman to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. The Newmans were married in Sank Center, Minnesota, on February 3, 1913, and have three children Everett 23 Eugene 14 and Donald 11. They homesteaded in Power district in 1912 and moved to Dupuyer region about two years ago.

Cascade Cagers Nose Out Teton In Close Victory

Cascade edged Teton 24 to 22 on a late sequence when Berger fed Roscoe Bellingham for the go ahead score and a final free throw sealed the win. Johnson led Teton with early points and Berger scored repeatedly as Cascade built and held a slim lead through a hard fought game.

NYA Project Proposes Dormitory Based Shop Plan

J M Peterson of the National Youth Administration met with the county board and NYA committee to discuss new projects for Teton county. They favor a shop project in the unused high school dormitory to sand and revarnish desks and build or repair school and public agency items, with a majority approving after reconsideration.

Northwest Refining shifts to broader distribution

C. C. Peake sales manager of Northwest Refining Co. visited Chateau Tuesday. The firm makes Grizzly gasoline, with Wallace Motor Co. as local dealer. Peake said popularity is growing and the program is being extended across the state and adjacent territory.
