A petition signed by 17 parents representing 137 children asks the county superintendent to create a new school district by severing territory from District No 21. The notice outlines boundaries and states the hearing will be held Tuesday February 15 at the courthouse.
Conrad hosts a tight 31 24 victory over Teton as free throw woes plagued the visitors. Bobby Johnson led Conrad with 13 points while Turner added 11. The game saw a late Conrad push and a one point difference in the third quarter before the final margin.
Ole Rosholt said the Farmers Merc Co of Dutton held its annual meeting with about 60 attendees. Officiating officers were reelected. Arne Hafto was rehired as manager. Directors include Al Willick Chas Proff Pete Peterson and Rosholt. A 12 percent patronage dividend was declared. No new plans were made for 1938.
The new community calendar is available at the city office for dates of future events. Lions club sponsors the project under R. E. Nelson and invites public use and convenience.
Special to The Acantha reports Ted Saylor of Chateau and Baylor, a junior in business administration, were elected to offices in the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at Washington State College in Pullman.
A fatal auto crash near Craig last Saturday claimed three lives. Earl T. Richards, son of Thomas Richards, was a Chinook business figure and co publisher of The Chinook Opinion. The elder Richards helped build the 1906 Teton County courthouse with Lease and Richards of Great Falls. Also killed were Phyllis May Cherry of Great Falls and Dora Brockway of Great Falls. The crash occurred when Richards’s car veered onto the wrong side of the road into a Greyhound bus.
C K Malone through attorney Geo M Coffey files civil action for $9000 plus six percent interest from Jan 1 1931 against By num Irrigation district. Harry Jones sues Herman Olson in attachment proceedings filed Jan 29 in district court. A marriage license issued for William Miller and Irene Malcott. Two licenses issued yesterday for Eddie Dennis and Margaret Lukin and for Alvin Cobell and Liberty Monroe.
Mrs W E Howard and W A Emerick were discharged Saturday from Maynard hospital. Mrs Evelyn Johnson of Dutton and Mrs Jim Russell with daughter Gladys of Dupuyer were discharged Saturday and Wednesday respectively. Carl Beardsley, a medical patient at Choteau hospital, was discharged last Saturday. Dean Corey underwent appendectomy and was discharged last Thursday. Ray Hamilton of Augusta was discharged Friday from Choteau hospital. Sylvia Pfrimmer of Dupuyer was discharged Sunday and Billie Calloway of Choteau was admitted last Thursday for medical treatment and discharged the next day.
Justice of the Peace J. G. Jackson officiated a double wedding at his Browning home. The couples were Eddie Dennis and Margaret Lukin, and Alvin Cabell and Liberty Monroe. Dennis is a grandson of Ed. Dennis, a longtime resident of Te ton.
Fort Shaw and Teton County high school teams split two games with Fort Shaw beating the Teton girls 19 to 12 and the Fort Shaw boys defeating the Teton Bulldogs 27 to 16. Key players include Stewart Cole Shoquist and Omholt for Fort Shaw and Stelling Gulbrandsen Scott Johnson for the Teton team.
County Superintendent Inez Eckford explains that the same transportation money schedule applies to both high schools and elementary schools. The schedule, adopted by the state board of education last April, is based on pupil distance and published last week. It clarifies that district transportation in Montana law is separate from the state schedule.
Dr. R G Keeton and Dr H W Bateman form a medical partnership in Choteau Montana with offices to be established at the Mozer cottage near the courthouse. Keeton, a Tulane graduate, recently arrived from Virginia City with Mrs Keeton to make their home here expecting part of his practice at the Choteau hospital. Moving vans arrived yesterday with household goods and equipment from Virginia City.
Work on First Street East begins after years of need as the city grades and oils the road from the city limits to the eastern route. City trucks haul dirt for gravel and oiling later, improving access to Choteau from Farmington Collins Agawam Dutton and nearby areas and aiding stop sign observation at Main avenue.
The third meeting of the farm mechanics school at Teton County High School will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Instructor Herb Winner will lead sessions on shop work including tool sharpening tempering and carpentry. Open to anyone interested in this type of work.
O B Neckstad, Spring Valley district, reports seven cattle died after licking empty white lead paint cans. Six livestock fell ill in December. veterinarian Dr B C Fisher confirmed lead poisoning from can contents. Cattle losses: three cows, three calves, and one two year old Hereford heifer.
Despite near 30 below zero, birthday balls honoring President Roosevelt drew good attendance. Advance ticket sales boosted finances though some organizers reported delays. Choteau Claude dances grossed 110.75 with 40.08 expenses. Farmington and other tickets added 31.75. Net from Power dance was 25 after 62.50 receipts and 37.50 expenses.
Clarence O. Johnson, longtime Choteau merchant and civic figure since 1931, buys a leading Missoula tourist camp with a grocery, meat market and gas station on 1638 West Broadway. Possession is March 1. Johnson will move his family later pending living quarters.
Amund O. Lee 79 longtime Fairfield resident and father of Deputy County Assessor Gilbert Lee died Monday in a Great Falls hospital after a period of illness. Born July 21 1858 in Norway he came to the United States 69 years ago and lived in Fairfield beach area for 29 years. Surviving are his widow Caroline Lee three sons Oscar Obert and Gilbert 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Grandson Harlan Lee a Teton County High School basketball player. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at St. Pauls Lutheran church Fairfield bench with Rev. A Lunde of Great Falls Our Saviors Lutheran Church officiating.
Former Montana supreme court chief justice Lew L. Callaway, a noted attorney, regaled friends in Choteau on a Tuesday business visit. He recalled past associations with Charles N. Pray, now a federal judge in Montana, in their Great Falls law practice.
Teton FFA basketball split a two game set with Conrad FFA, losing 33 17 at Conrad and winning 20 11 at home. Local lineup includes forwards Jim Rose John Shoquist Harry Luinstra Bob Armstrong John Armstrong guards Rob Van Scherpenzeel Arnold Neiswender Jim Peebles Dave Rife. The team may travel to Walter Saturday for another game.
Dr. B Maynard has been ill for about a week at his hospital with a serious but not critical condition. A fall at the E A Savory ranch near Dupuyer caused a shoulder injury. He later worked a Browning call and went to coal mines north of Pendroy where a chill led to flu and worsened a heart ailment. Dr Patterson ordered rest. Condition improved yesterday.
The Choteau Racketeers defeated the Dutton town team 29 to 18 in a decisive basketball game. Yeager led the locals with strong scoring while Johnson topped the visitors. A return matchup with Dutton was promised and a Friday meet with Walter’s independent team was planned.
The Chateau Woman's Club art group will gather Monday evening February 7 at Mrs. Fred 8 Willson's home. The program includes Art in Medieval Europe with chairwoman Mrs. Cecil Passmore and Art During the Renaissance with chairwoman Miss Jane Morton.
