Jack Sweat Dies in Spokane Pioneer Rural Fire Chief
Jack Sweat 60 prominent Whitman County businessman and rural fire department organizer died Saturday in Spokane after a two week illness. He was postmaster at Diamond and owned the Diamond General Store for 25 years. He served in World War I with the 91st division and later taught in Montana, marrying Alice Stipe in 1925. He leaves widow Alice, three sons John B Pullman William T and Robert D, daughter Mary Lou Kelty California and two sisters Helen and Cole Sweat. Burial with military honors in Colfax.

The Chateau Boy Scout Troop maps projects for Boy Scout week activities including a Penney store window display and a camping scene. Patrols Aggator and Flying Eagles plan first aid demonstrations and a rescuer victim scene at the Lion’s Hall on Feb 6 7:30 PM. About 100 hardy anglers braved 5 to 10 below zero at the seventh annual V F W Perch Derby on Bynum Reservoir. Deputy Sheriff George O'Hare of Chateau won grand prize with a 1 pound 1 1/2 ounce perch, earning 19.25 dollars. Douglas Braunberger of Great Falls took the men's prize with a one pounder and 6 1/2 dollars. Mrs. Fred Couch of Sun River won the ladies’ prize with a 1 1/2 ounce perch for 6 1/2 dollars. Allen Wienholz of Great Falls captured the boys prize a fishing outfit.

Joe Seals Dies Veteran of Spanish-American War Rites Held
Military rites were held Tuesday for Joe Seals a Black veteran of the Spanish-American War who died at Warm Springs a week earlier. He lived in Conrad and Pendray before entering Warm Springs State hospital in 1932. Cause of death was coronary thrombosis. Seals likely hailed from Virginia and had a brother Frank in 1932. He enlisted July 1 1898 and was discharged February 28 1899. Funeral services were by the Veterans Council with VF rites at the grave. Interment was Chateau cemetery with pallbearers Paul Kropp Rollie Ferris Hie Duits Halvor Daley Bert Packer George Carroll.

Leona Schnug 19 Dies in Two Car Crash Near Wellington Colo
Miss Leona Virginia Schnug aged 19 daughter of Mr and Mrs William Schnug formerly of Chateau was killed in a Jan 25 head on collision near Wellington Colorado. Also killed were Miss Jennie Rotroff 63 and Miss Alto Rotroff 60 with injuries to others. Colorado State Patrolmen investigated. Funeral services were held Jan 28. Survivors include parents a sister two brothers and grandparents. The accident occurred near the Schnug home on the Great Falls highway.

Choteau Bulldogs split a rough weekend as they travel to Walier and Sunburst after back to back losses. Shelby Coyotes beat Choteau 50 to 48 on their home floor, with Mike Cleveland scoring 20 for Shelby and Jim Lohse 16 for Choteau. Cut Bank Wolves defeated Choteau 65 to 60, led by Dick Swinger 20 and Mike Allen 19 while Wes Higgins scored 17 for the Bulldogs and made all 11 free throws. Mr and Mrs W W Scott spent the week at the Boulder Ranchotel.

Power Family Loses Home In Morning Fire
The home of Mr and Mrs Jack May a Great Northern Railway employee in Power burned early Monday. Flames discovered about 3 am drove the family from the house with only the clothes they wore. The fire destroyed the building and contents in 20 degree below zero weather. The four children were with grandparents and a voluntary subscription drive started to aid the family.
