The local American Legion Auxiliary holds its regular meeting Monday night at 8 00 pm January 2 at the Legion hall. A brief business session precedes a talk at 8 30 pm on American Legion legislation. A social hour and a special program follow with lunch served at close of events.
County Superintendent Muriel S. Reiquam's office distributed 64,262.67 for general schools 66,027.67 for accredited high schools and 12,831.90 for high school transportation. Chateau high school received 22,536.55 Fairfield 24,831.39 Dutton 7,887.20 Power 10,072.53 and others 6,178.73 4,854.24 323.62 1,420.99 for transportation. The largest elementary received 13,034.44 while the smallest was 192.15. Amounts are based on last year's ANB and need.
A scheduled Monday night game featuring the Harlem Clowns and the All American Indians was cancelled after a car wreck involving the Clowns. The wire to Supt. Ed Schiller said the accident was not serious and all remaining games this season are cancelled. The event was sponsored by the Choteau High School Lettermen’s Club for the new gym.
Clarence E. Stenson 64 died Christmas day at his Farmington area home after two years illness. Born Sept 4 1891 in Dawson Minnesota he moved to Chateau area in 1939 and farmed with his son. Surviving wife daughter Nancy Moore Seattle son Gerald Stenson two sisters and a brother. Funeral held yesterday with Rev Grant S Moore officiating. interment Chateau cemetery.
Samuel Winter 70 of Fairfield died at home after a yearlong illness. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 pm at Zion Lutheran Church Power with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens Great Falls. Born in Russia August 21 1915 he married Pauline Neimann in Klestiz Russia January 21 1910. They emigrated to the United States that year settling in South Dakota then Brooks Montana Denton and Fairfield. He farmed northeast of Fairfield and is survived by his widow three sons Reynolds Pasadena Calif John and Ferdinand Fairfield two daughters Elsie Janke Big Timber Emma Nemic Coffee Creek a sister Maria Austria four brothers Michael Odessa Washington Ferdinand Aylmer Ontario William St Paul Minn Daniel Coffee Creek and five grandchildren.
The 1956 annual gathering of Teton County Young Old Timers will occur in Fairfield on February 11 at the American Legion hall. It marks the first time the event is hosted outside Chateau and includes a banquet entertainment and a dance with Ernest Thorn as president and Bob Zion as vice president.
The Chateau postoffice reports its largest pre Christmas business on record with 11 210 letters canceled on Monday December 19 far surpassing the 1954 mark by about 1600 items. The office began recording Christmas mail on December 7 and logged 45 incoming bags on December 22 with 43 on that day. Postmaster C Gibson Monkman thanks patrons for cooperation and for using labels to designate local and out of town mail.
The Choteau Volunteer Fire Department hosts its New Year’s Eve Ball at the Choteau park pavilion with Obernolte’s orchestra providing music. Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose will serve lunch at midnight to benefit Mooseheart activities.
Amos McComb Jr and Mrs Mabel Fredrickson were married on Christmas day by Justice of the Peace Jim Sulgrove. Witnesses were Mr and Mrs Williams Riggs. The couple will reside in Great Falls where McComb works at a Safeway store.
The State Fish and Game Commission will issue 400 deer permits at the courthouse on Saturday December 31 for hunting in two Teton county areas. Three hundred permits cover the Sun River south area and Deep Creek north boundary, while one hundred cover the Deep Creek west boundary to Willow Creek north. Permits for both areas are valid starting Saturday December 31.
