Havre high school basketball defeated Teton county high 22 to 17 on a Saturday barnstorming trip to Chateau. Havre, on their way to Great Falls for the morning train, played a strong visitor game and held the win. Earlier, Christmas Eve, Teton alumni faced locals and won 22 to 12.
Christmas Day in Choteau passed quietly with residents at home or visiting nearby towns. In the evening audiences flocked to the Royal theater to see Oliver Twist, a Dickens classic, while local merchants reported solid business overall.
The church reports strong turnout for Christmas services with Prof R A Keyes and Mrs Lyford of Great Falls aiding in music. Evening program featured Sunday School and choir, children received candy. Next Sunday expected performer Lawrence Skinner of Great Falls. Epworth League at 6 30 p m. Ladies' Industrial election Jan 9. Pastor Robert B Culbertson invites all to attend.
Grover C. Parker shipped cattle from his ranch 15 miles west of Chateau to the Chicago market. Five steers averaged 1246 pounds at eight cents each, three cows averaged 920 pounds at four and a half cents, and other individual cows ranged from 1000 to 1199 pounds at three to four and one half cents. Two bulls in canners averaged 1190 pounds at three and a half cents. E. C. Lear reported the load required removing a large steer at Great Falls, but Parker noted Chicago’s flood of livestock and still deemed the prices good for the stock.
Insanity hearing for Louis Vidal leads to commitment to the state asylum at Warm Springs. Witnesses Frank Vidas Pauline Polich and officials Chas Crane H T Rhoads and H W Bateman testified.
C. M. Woods traveled from Conrad on business Friday, staying for the day.
At 2465 feet in the Dry Forks well three miles north of Conrad a 20 foot thick oil showing was found in what may be stray sand. Drillers hope deeper drilling to about 3000 feet could strike a larger oil pool. Opinions vary on the formation, with some calling it Madison lime and others noting only its hard light gray appearance. If water is cased off, 3 to 4 barrels per day might be possible from current depth.
Helena December 25 reports show Montana gasoline and refined product users paid two cents a gallon to the state this year totaling 405 681 04. The state distributes 40 percent to counties and allocates 60 percent to the general fund and highway fund with the remainder noted for licensing and tax collection processes.

Johnny Reed J H Mason and Jas Wilson were jailed on $10 000 bonds after arraignment in district court for the attempted robbery of the First National Bank at Fairfield last November. They pleaded not guilty and a jury term is set for early February with additional arrests anticipated nationwide as a bank robbery network is investigated.
On December 19, 1923, at the Robertson home seven miles west of Choteau, Miss Olive Marie Robertson married Hiv Duits with Rev. Harry T. Stong officiating. The couple will reside on the Strain ranch west of town and are praised by local friends. A reception at the Third hill school house followed, with many neighbors in attendance.
The Peoples' Bank at Augusta in Lewis and Clark county closes with capital stock listed at 340 000. G. J. Bonine serves as manager. The closure is tied to widespread agricultural downturn since 1920, a period of low demand following a so called normalcy era.
Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Knowlton of Blackleaf celebrated their silver wedding anniversary last Friday evening, December 22. Supper for twenty followed a midnight service, with guests including Mr. Orlo Stansberry and Mr. Shuman. Decorations featured water cress and jack pine bows. R. R. McNeal hurried to Bynum to fetch his son Bert, while Jack Hazel and family returned from the saw mill to spend Christmas at home.
G M Coffey visited Great Falls over Christmas. Rasmussen visited from Conrad last Friday. Attorney Phil Cole was in Helena on legal business. M G Carver and family left Tuesday to spend Christmas with relatives. Teton County High and Choteau public schools closed for holidays and reopen January 2. Mary Jackson underwent appendicitis surgery last Friday and is recovering. Mrs Henry Robison returned Friday from six weeks with her mother in Long Beach California.
Clerk of the Court B M Jacobson issued a marriage license on December 19 to Hie Duits 37 of Choteau and Olive Marie Robertson 36 of Choteau.
Mrs Ida Waterman hosted Sunday dinner with J L Weaver D F Waterman and families. Guests including Leslie Hagel Lucile Fitz Gerald Roscoe Thompson and John Harkins visited Chateau to see a show. T L Weaver moved to Kevin for a new job. The Bon Ton group bid farewell with a prank onion handkerchief. A school house dance drew few due to another Christmas program. Hoerman and Waterman lost horses to ice. Melvin Berringer injured in a car crash returning from a dance.
The focal post office was likely the busiest place in town before and after the Christmas holiday. Postmaster and Mrs. Core logged long hours to clear the mail and heavy parcel post accumulations.
Officials of the First State Bank of Shelby announce reopening for business Saturday December 23. The bank will resume without debts or rediscounted loans. Stockholders elected new directors while most depositors signed waivers arranging half the deposits payable November 1, 1925 and the remainder a year later. Efforts are also underway to reopen the closed First National Bank of Shelby.
Helena Dec 24 The Montana Supreme Court held counties that deposit in banks are general creditors and have no preferred claims if a bank fails reversing a Powell county decision in the case Henry Bignell et al versus BE Cummins receiver First State Bank Ovando The ruling traces the county as a state subdivision and says the state may not bind itself through its creature without explicit authority and that counties must rely on general deposits rather than priority protection.
Demolition marks the loss of a 45 year old landmark in Château. The timber and mud structure, built with adze and broadaxe, recalled era before prohibition and western days in Montana. Neighbors mourn the passing as an era ends.

After the conviction of R. B. Noble in federal court at Great Falls, the West Side State Bank suspended operations Friday morning. Noble had resigned as acting head, but depositor confidence fell after the indictment, prompting directors to decide the public would be best served by a suspension.
The Montana Development association announces prize winners from a summer tilage contest across three districts. Charles P. McGuire of Highwood wins the sweepstakes for the largest statewide yield, with over 61 bushels per acre in the central district leads, and state averages show summer tilled land yielding about 36 bushels per acre. The awards total $12,000 in prizes with merchandise from state and out of state sponsors.
A December 13 correction fixes a typographical mistake in the county commissioners minutes. The mileage amount for Sheriff Wm. Reiquam should read 148.60 instead of 1484.60. The error is acknowledged and corrected in the regular meeting record.
