County Agent Robert Clarkson notes a rise in precipitation across 1932 with November records showing 0.31 inch and a growing trend of low mean temperatures since July. He warns 1933 may be even wetter if current patterns hold, citing Chateau totals of 10.93 inches through December 1 and a normal yearly total of 13.14 inches.
Final Red Cross roll call report from K. E. Sturgis to Miss Margaret Nagle shows $857 raised from 296 members across communities. Totals include Chateau $565 from 156 members and Dutton $159.50 from 60 members, with various smaller contributions and calls for published local aid figures and monthly chapter meetings.
A high school girls club organized Tuesday to prepare refreshments for the basketball squads after games. Four classes will host in turn. Sponsored by Miss Dorothy Gerer. Officers: President Joy May Pollock, reps Phyllis Bloomdahl, freshman Mary Elizabeth Edwards, sophomores Mildred Olson, juniors Francis Kolste, seniors.
Miss Margaret Nagle praises public generosity as Red Cross prepares third year of Christmas boxes in Teton county. Twelve boxes completed yesterday with many donations from Choteau firms including 100 pounds bacon from Choteau Meat, 24 cans milk from Cash and Carry, and toys from Choteau Hardware. Boxes contain sugar, coffee, jello, nuts, candy, fruit, bacon, milk, clothing and toys. Donations continue from individuals and businesses, with food shortages noted and vegetables welcome.
Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Fisher return from Great Falls where the zone meeting of Chevrolet dealers and salesmen showcased the 1933 Chevrolet. Two new cars and one new truck will premiere here Saturday in Chateau. Fisher touts the no draft ventilating body feature, safety plate glass, tear drop design, peaver tail rear, concealed gas tank, deep V radiator, longer wheel base, and horsepower up to 65 with larger, richer bodies.
Mr and Mrs M R Swain traveled from their ranch near Pishkun reservoir to Chateau on Tuesday reporting roads unusable for cars. They noted slight livestock losses in their area and a bob sled they used for travel.
County commissioners awarded contracts at the December meeting. Dr. H W Bateman named county physician at 300 dollars yearly. Chateau hospital to provide hospitalization at 15 dollars weekly per patient. Dr R T O'Neil appointed county health officer at 420 dollars yearly. Chas G Roberts reawarded burial of poor at 50 dollars per burial. New bids for county farm operation won by Mr and Mrs Brolsma with monthly and daily rates. Three appointments to county high school board appointed.
A jury found Algon Udin not liable for $10,200 damages claimed by Claude Davis, an employee of the state highway department, in a two week court session ending with a Saturday morning verdict. Davis alleged a protruding iron culvert crashed into his car due to poor lighting and Udin’s recklessness while transporting the culvert. The defense contended Davis’ car and culvert were improperly positioned and inadequately lit. The jury consisted of George Zier Oliver Mauseth Martin Hovde George Wright R R Swan Marcus Johnson John Depner X F Hoeschen Sam Luinstra Truman J Oliver and Lee Weesner.
The Chateau Racketeers travel to Shelby Sunday for a 3 p m game against the Shelby Independents. Clint Core, manager, says the independent afternoon game trend will debut here. Captain Dinty Moore leads a lineup including Earles Loomis Cohoe Moore Peters Holmes Evans.
Oscar A. Provost of Choteau will join Ray mond T. Nagle’s office as part of the attorney general elect’s administration, taking office January 2. He said he values his Choteau ties but could not decline the unique opportunity and asks clients to visit his Larson building office before December 22 to settle matters.
Firefighters were summoned Sunday around 3 PM to Mrs. Lucy A. Blazer’s residence near the high school dormitory after a blow torch used to thaw water pipes ignited a fire between second story joists. The blaze spread across the floor. crews chopped through to reach it. Fire engine skidded on the way and dumped firefighter John Weaver but caused no serious damage.
J B Hodgskiss returned from Great Falls where he aided Sun River Poultry Growers in their annual turkey shipment and visited Augusta. He is president of the Northern Montana Turkey Growers association.
Teton basketball set to host Brady Friday in the second home game of the season. The Conrad game was canceled due to impassable roads. The squad has been practicing to fix errors and impressed in a Tuesday scrimmage with the town team. Brady recently beat Power, and Teton prospects look strong. Players listed for the contest include Connole, Takerud, Armstrong, Mozer, Walley, Harmon, Folsom, Earles, Dale, Jordonnais, McDonnell, Doughty for the boys and Emily McCullough, Jessie Moore, Margaret Stephens, Helen Cohoe, Kathryn Davis, Laura Miller, Norma Tennant, Madge Looney, Helen Redmond for the girls. An additional game with the Great Falls reserves is being sought for around the 22nd.
In a remote district near Chateau, Irene Linjatie aged 15 and Sylvia Linjatie aged 8 perished after being caught in a blizzard while walking to school. Their bodies were found days later by Charles Twiggs and a rescue party, with weather hampering retrieval. The Linjatie family mourns a second tragedy after a 1928 fatal accident involving Gabriel Linjatie.
Teton county high school plans an adult farm shop course led by Smith-Hughes instructor M. C. Knox. A Jetter surveys farmers for interest as the program runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with 18 to 20 places and a $360 materials deposit refundable.
Reverend Lee Young arrived from Great Falls to conduct Sunday services at the local Episcopal church, guiding worship and preaching to congregants.
A large crowd gathered at the courthouse to hear the sentence on George Hoffman who was found guilty and sentenced to death for murdering George Durrell. Defense attorney S J Rigney moved for a new trial prompting Judge Hattersley to set a hearing for December 28 and allow new evidence claims and possible juror misconduct to be explored.
