Winter Wheat In Good Shape Across Montana

Winter wheat was in fair to good condition across Montana with western areas at fair to good and eastern areas from good to excellent. Snow cover was light to moderate, with the heaviest in the southwest. Montana's out of state wheat shipments for January to June 1973 rose 35 percent from 1972, totaling 53.17 million bushels with 30.33 million winter wheat and 22.84 million spring wheat. Rail transport carried about 84 percent of wheat, trucks 12 percent less than last year, and western destinations received about 95 percent of shipments. By end of November cattle feed began early, and nearly 70 percent of cattle were on supplemental feed statewide as grazing resumed under milder weather. Stockwater was short in portions of the northcentral and northeast districts.
