Bert Barnhardt, first defendant this term convicted of violating prohibition laws, received a sixty day county jail sentence and a $200 fine after jury verdicts. George Rochford was found not guilty of sale and possession of intoxicating liquor by a jury in Judge Greene's court.
B F Collins of Helena changed his plea from not guilty to guilty after state evidence was presented. He fined 200 dollars and jailed sixty days for transportation and possession of intoxicating liquor tied to a seizure of twenty cases of Canadian beer by Sheriff Wm D Reiquam. The sheriff moved the entire cargo to the courtroom floor before the jury.
A jury on Saturday found FE.BE. Townsend guilty of violating prohibition laws and sentenced him to sixty days in the county jail and a two hundred dollar fine.
A case against Sid Mowery charging liquor law violations was dismissed on motion by the county attorney for lack of evidence.
Jury acquitted K B Cohoe on a charge of illegally selling intoxicating liquor after a trial Monday. Geo W Magee defended. Also, Henry Kind faced dynamiting fish charges with a verdict of acquittal after about two hours deliberation. County Attorney Stanley R Foot led the case for the state.
Teton county farmers pooled their Christmas turkeys for shipment to New York via the Northern Creamery Co. of Great Falls. No. 1 stock sold at 33 cents per pound, No. 2 at 24 cents, old Toms at 30 cents. 73 percent of 30 000 pounds graded No. 1 with 22 000 pounds No. 1 in one car. Additional poultry valued around 500 bought from local growers.
Members of the Monday Musical Club present a recital at the grade school auditorium in Chateau next Monday evening December 15 at 8 15. Tickets on sale 50c adults 25c children. One third of proceeds go to the school. Program features cantata The Garden of Flowers and selections by Messrs Fratzke McDonald Culbertson Nelson and Keyes with soloists and choruses.
Records from County Treasurer O. G. Meadows show $190 948 11 in current taxes received within the legal time for the first instalment. The 1924 taxes total $258 377 51, with half due December 1 and half due next May, and 53 percent of the total has been collected so far.
Announcement cards from California report the marriage of Miss Helen Cowell and John Tracy Kelly in Los Angeles on December 3. The couple will reside at 424 North Wilton Place, Los Angeles.
The board of county commissioners in regular session re appointed C. H. Porter to the Te ton County High School board of trustees and named J. G. Jackson of Choteau to succeed A. B. Andrews whose term expired. Porter succeeds himself.
Charles M. Guthrie longtime Montana journalist student leader at the state university was chosen chairman of the constitution committee for Sigma Delta Chi at Bloomington Indiana. He went to Bloomington as a Montana chapter delegate and visited relatives in Bedford Indianapolis Lexington Cincinnati Chicago and Faribault before returning to Missoula.
A Montana Day observance in Choteau features a community sing under the Montana Month campaign. Barbara Ann Scharr of Helena wrote the booster song to the tune Carry Me Back to Old Virginia, urging residents to promote Montana through letters, papers, and county outreach.
Population 6500 across 1926 square miles. 125000 irrigated acres and 527119 non irrigated. Wheat 2 million dollars and dairy products 250000. County debt 500000 less than peers, 9 towns with rails, 55 rural schools, a $180000 free high school, and Choteau as county seat with 1000 residents.
Mrs Burgess of Helena reports the Woman's Club will mail care packages to 280 ex service men at Ft Harrison and elsewhere. Donations of handkerchiefs soap gum cards and more are requested by December 20 at Rexall. Minstrel Show adds 200 dollars to the treasury and New Year's Eve dance is planned at the high school.
Mrs. R F Baillie of Teton county announces prizes to encourage schoolchildren to sell Christmas seals. First prize is a deluxe scale with wall chart for $40 or more sold. second prize a playground ball and bat for $10 or more. third prize a health training book for $4.90. fourth prize a bangle pin for each child selling fifty cents worth.
The Chateau Woman's Club library fund gains more than 200 dollars from a high school auditorium minstrel show directed by Hugh Wypper. Featured were solos, choruses, duets, and a beauty contest winner chosen by audience votes with the Pridham orchestra providing music before and during intermission.
Teton county has retired its entire debt to Chouteau county after the board of county commissioners ordered the final installment paid on a 41499.42 settlement for land annexed to Teton from Chouteau by the 1921 legislative action. The final payment dropped to 13799.82, one quarter of the originally agreed amount, with settlement made in four equal installments. The board also awarded the poor farm contract to Mrs. F. M. Bird, who will become superintendent January 1, replacing Byron Carson, and awarded contracts for county physician and county public health officer.
Fire last Friday afternoon, likely from sparks at the farmhouse chimney, leveled a chicken house granary shed and barn on A. H. Burrows ranch ten miles west of Chateau along the Belleview road. Forty bushels of grain fortyfive chickens and harness were lost. Burrows saved a nearby barn and granary with 80 bushels of wheat. No residence damage. Mrs. Wigd enwald a patient at Choteau General Hospital.
Charles P. Crane left the county commissioners room at the courthouse after six years of service four as chairman. He received a white gold watch from fellow commissioners and county officers as a token of esteem. Crane was praised for untiring service, sound judgment, and conduct in the best interests of Teton County, and he departs with the confidence of the court house staff and many friends.
George Rochford of Bynum was acquitted in district court of bootlegging last Friday. He was jailed Tuesday after Sheriff Reiquam seized an automatic revolver allegedly used to threaten citizens. Rochford, returned to Bynum, reportedly boasted and threatened John Cashman, leading to charges of carrying concealed weapons.
The Flathead Forest completed fourteen miles of telephone line from Schaffer Meadows to Gooseberry Park linking Flathead and Lewis and Clark National forests. A second link on Spotted Horse Rock Creek Divide tied the systems together enabling calls from Choteau to Columbia Falls or Swan Lake. The Lewis and Clark line totals 188 miles serving five ranger stations six lookouts eight fire crews and seven per diem guards. Emergency dining is organized for construction crews to enable rapid fire response. Radio is used for weather forecasts and plane ground communication in some areas.
