Thieves Loot Wedum’s Federated Store in Chateau
Burglars broke in through a rear window at Wedum’s Federated Store in Chateau and stole 503 in cash plus 300 in clothing. They forced entry, ransacked envelopes in a safe, leaving one 101 envelope behind, and fled before dawn. A witness reported seeing a person in the building around 1 am.

He served three years in the ETO with the 5th Rangers and the 90th Division and two years in Panama. Mrs. Smith served 31 months in the WACs and belonged to the original WAAC. She reenlisted five months ago and is assigned to Fort Lawton Seattle port of embarkation. Smith expects to be sent soon to six months in Korea.

Orville McManus of Augusta shot his wife Georgia McManus 29 last Thursday night at the McBee soft drink parlor in Augusta. Witnesses said four shots were fired striking Mrs McManus in the temple. she died minutes later. McManus held at Helena jail on possible violence risk. Funeral held in Augusta with burial in the local cemetery.

City council will decide whether to sell $108,000 water and sewer bonds in a special meeting set for December 16. Bids from Citizens State Bank at Chateau and Piper, Jaffray Hopwood of Minneapolis were received. Montana State Land Board offered 2 1/4 percent but not accepted. Bonding was approved August 6 for sewer, water mains, a disposal plant, reservoir, and pipe orders. Permits granted include a frame structure, museum front change, and two neon signs.
