Donations pour in from local businesses for prizes as the Choteau Woman’s Club prepares the annual Labor Day flower show in the city park at 9 a.m. on September 7. A tea and a dance follow, with exhibits deadline set for noon.
The Chateau swimming pool will close Sunday evening with free admission through the balance of the week. K E Sturgis, pool committee chair, announced supervision will continue during free days. Attendance soared this year, with June 878, July 2,578, and August about 1,500 so far, and a roughly $300 maintenance cost funded from Lions civic funds if needed.
At a Lions Club meeting in Choteau plans were outlined for a two day 49er to be held early in October with dates to be announced. H A Winner chairs a special committee with Dr H W Bateman Wm F Olsen Fred S Willson and K E Sturgis. Proceeds go to the Lions civic fund and activities include games of chance a dance and refreshments at the American Legion pavilion in the city park.
Arthur Hirshberg longtime manager of Jos Hirshberg and Co store since 1908 died at Chateau hospital from accidental poison. Born 1884 in Germany he immigrated to the U S and rose from chore boy to manager. Survived by widow two daughters sister and several Hirshberg relatives. funeral at Masonic temple.
Mrs J Burr Huffman long time Cha teau public school primary teacher will conduct a private kindergarten for four and five year olds. She will use the M E church Sunday school primary room and resides at apartment 10 in the McDonald block.
Cha teau lodge No. 11 I O O F resumes meetings next Tuesday night September 1 with Noble Grand K R Smith in chair. First meeting of the season expects many important matters before the lodge and officers seek a 2000 attendance. George Thompson serves as lodge secretary.
The fall meeting of the Teton County Home Demonstration club council is set for Friday Sept 4 at the courthouse in Chateau. Newly elected officers will be installed and club programs for 1936 1937 discussed with Miss Francis Smith outlining plans. A booth for the fair on Sept 19 will be arranged and a noon pot luck lunch will follow.
Montana Power Co. officials cut power this morning for repair work in the city. The Acantha was late in the mails for the first time in over 30 years, due to the outage.
Yesterday in Great Falls Bert McNeal 26 and Jeanne Dawson 21 of Glacier Park obtained marriage licenses.
Choteau public schools plan a September opening with a renovated building and a full faculty led by Miss Ruby Miller. New teachers include Emma Hendrickson, Geraldine Moult on, and Patricia Wieberge. Janet Aldrich will teach primary. Open house to showcase improvements may be held next week as County Supt Inez Eckford notes staff is nearly complete and transportation funds will drop this year.
Max Kuchenbecker of the U S Chamber of Commerce visited the Chateau on Monday in behalf of The Nation's Business, the Chamber’s commercial magazine and official publication.
Plans underway in Choteau for a September 17 gathering commemorating the last unit of highway 33 between Chateau and Augusta. Mayor C W Burns elected permanent chairman with W W Smith as secretary. Committees named for feed, refreshments, program, and finance. invitations extended to Governor Holt and highway officials.
County commissioners allocate 200 for a fair at the American Legion pavilion with home economics and agricultural exhibits. 4-H club council names include G. C. McDermott and Mrs. Ora Schultz to lead committees for 4-H and adult divisions, with department chairs and entry deadlines. Livestock exhibits due Sept 19. all exhibits in place by 10 a.m. Sept 19 and judged by dinnertime. Afternoon program features demonstrations, a dress revue, and a Chateau Lions Club theater visit. evening 4-H club dance follows. Prizes include ribbons and prize money. last year’s entrants received 30 cents for submitting articles and records, this year slightly higher. Premium list outlines classes for market hogs, cattle, sheep, poultry, crops, and home economics and clothing divisions with varied cash awards.
The county high school will open on September 8 under Principal A B Guthrie board late due to Labor Day. Miss Miriam Barnhill resigns language instructor post to join Kinman Business University Spokane. Faculty largely unchanged with A B Guthrie HM A Winner C I Hunziker J Kent Midgett Mae Walton Grace Thompson. Dormitory headed by Mrs J Wilson Moore. Dining room gets new concrete floor and auditorium interior redecorated in buff by Fred Gewald.
Highway officials met in the city and announced a switch from spray oil to road mix for the new Chateau Augusta road section. The sprayed portion will be reworked with road mix and work is to resume soon after a Glacier Park project is completed.
Principal A B Guthrie and wife return to their city home after an East Coast vacation by auto. Their son A B Guthrie Jr city editor of the Lexington Leader joined them briefly. The trip included Lexington Louisville Cincinnati Indianapolis and Providence R I to attend the Lions International convention plus visits to New York Baltimore and Washington D C.
