Choteau Public Schools announce new teaching personnel for the 1976-77 year. Gene Sentz will teach fifth grade after forestry studies and two years of teaching experience. Lentz holds a Master’s in education and will help with the grade school flag football program.
David E. Gunderson 49 longtime Power resident and Army WWII veteran died Monday August 23 in Fort Harrison Veterans Hospital after two months as patient. He married Dolores Frissell in 1949 and farmed since. Survived by widow, parents, children Dani Darci Dru one grandchild two brothers and two sisters. Funeral Wednesday at Croxford and Sons Chapel with Rev. Charles Burns officiating. Cremation followed.
Subscribers are urged to report address changes promptly to avoid post office charges increasing to 25 cents per change. The paper will deduct the cost from individual subscriptions if not updated. The notice also lists staff hires including Tim J. Anderson as biology and science teacher and assistant basketball coach. Richard Dean Jr. as commercial subjects teacher and coach. Norman Kamrud as physics chemistry and math teacher. Jean Ott as home economics teacher. and Julie Torstad as high school librarian with a North Dakota education.
Highway Patrolman Roger Kelly urges motorists to verify expiration month on licenses and renew as due. He notes many owners forget the expiry date and warns officers issue warnings and citations. He instructs placing the new sticker over the year column on the plate bottom, not over the month, to keep expiry clear.
The United Methodist Women hold their first fall meeting on Wednesday September 1 at 2 p.m. in the church parlor. The theme Shaping Tomorrow Today will be presented by Pauline Murphy and Iona Zgoda. President Deanna Styren will lead the business session followed by a salad bar hosted by the Mary Martha circle chaired by Florence Kelly. All church women and friends are invited.
Elaine Tesch of Te ton Nursing Home was named nursing home queen in Montana on August 21 at Helena and is one of ten finalists advancing to the national competition in September. A coronation is planned at Teton Nursing Home and coordinator Mrs Elmer Erickson will appear on KRTV Channel 3 on September 1 for an interview about the program. The effort has raised public awareness of nursing home residents and needs while boosting cooperation among staff, residents, homes, and communities.
A meeting of the Men's City Association and Leagues is set for Wednesday August 25 at 8:30 p.m. at the Chateau Country Club. The association will elect officers and handle business, then leagues will decide a league start date. Team representatives are urged to attend.
Firefighters were called Monday at 10 a m to a haystack blaze at the Leif Larsen farm east of Chateau. The haystack burned but the crew prevented spread and no other damage occurred. The cause remains undetermined.
Harvest across Teton County progressed despite wind and showers. Eastern areas led, with winter wheat mostly finished and spring crops under way. Disease and low protein in winter wheat reduced yields, while warm days remain crucial. Statewide, winter wheat 65 percent done and spring wheat 55 percent harvested with barley 45 percent.
Police Commissioner Tony Jaconetty announced crosswalk lines on Chateau's main street and near schools have been repainted. He urged motorists to stop for pedestrians and warned that police will issue citations. With school starting soon, authorities urged use of crosswalks and avoid jaywalking. Mayor Hamilton noted a water line bid opening for the new hospital set for Sept 6 at 8 p.m. and discussed new sewer work with no action pending.
Peter Sandmo an early homesteader in this area died Tuesday Aug 17 in a Great Falls hospital at age 96. Funeral services were held Aug 21 at Banks Chapel Chateau with Rev James Engh officiating. He was born Jan 11 1879 in Norway came to the U.S. in 1900 and later homesteaded south of Choteau after owning a Black Eagle bar. Survivors include a stepdaughter six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The 1976-77 term for Choteau Public Schools begins September 7 at 9 a.m. A full day of classes with lunch service. Mrs John Van Bolcum is head cook, June Lensing as assistant. Ten meal tickets cost $5 and 20 tickets $10. Kindergarten times unchanged.
Larry Talifson of Chateau hit a hay truck on a curve near Bird Hill and crashed into a field after the hay bales spilled. Walter Roberts of Fairfield drove the hay truck. Highway Patrolman Roger Kelly investigated along with reports of a second county crash near Power and a private property accident at Mountaire Development near Willow Creek. No fatalities in Teton County for 204 days. school notices follow.
Registration for new grade school students is Friday Aug 27 from 9 am to 4 pm at the grade school office. High school registration follows: Seniors Aug 26, Juniors Aug 27, Sophomores Aug 30 9 am to 12 noon, Freshmen Aug 30 1 pm to 4 pm. For more info call 466-2230 or 466-2639.
Coach Lee Reynolds announced Chateau High School will hold the first girls basketball practice this Friday August 27 at 7 p.m. in the school gym. All interested players should attend with gear as the team focuses on fundamentals with non conference games starting September 17.
