Henri Chouteau Dyer and his daughter Miss Chouteau Dyer of St. Louis, descendants of Pierre Chouteau, visited Choteau yesterday. The family notes Pierre helped found the American Fur Company that opened up Montana, with Pierre also giving names to Pierre S D, Chouteau city and Chouteau county in Montana. The visitors are touring the West on a vacation trip and paused to view the town bearing their ancestor's name.

Ekalaka Man Buys Roxy Theatre in Choteau
Mack Niccum formerly of Ekalaka has taken ownership and management of the Roxy theatre in Choteau. He bought it from the Choteau Realty Co. for 66000, and will personally manage from an apartment above the cinema. Films from Montana Realty Co. show until Sept 30 before Niccum’s selections begin.

Drilling Firms Fail to Find Oil in Four Utah Wells
Four northern and western Teton county wells drilled by firms including Taylor Drilling and Wasatch Phillips showings were disappointing. Farmers Union Mackornel found only a sulphur-water return at 2765 feet. Stephens Petroleum suffered a cable tool failure near the old O Neill well. Wasatch Phillips reached Madison Lime top at 2275 feet but drilled into sulphur water with no porosity. General Petroleum abandoned its Blackleaf canyon deep test at 7300 feet with no oil or gas and may seek Devonian test near Agawam with 20000 acres leased.

Women's Club Flower Show Set For Saturday at Park Pavilion
The annual flower show of the Women’s club unfolds this Saturday in the park pavilion with 35 classifications. Entries allowed one per class with judging in the afternoon and a tea from 2 to 5. 4-H club meets concurrent with the event and the public is invited. Life in Igloo Alaska Tells of Remote Village
Edna Peterson described life in Igloo Alaska where only three whites live among Eskimos including a missionary nurse and teacher. Stores, mail, and no roads define the settlement while films show daily Eskimo life and work. Peterson plans to return this fall to teach again as Margaret Scott joined the Lions event in solidarity.

Oiling has begun on the Dutton road east of Choteau with E. C. Powell as contractor. One mile is oiled so far from the Luinstra bridge toward Chateau. The surface will extend to Chick's Shell corner on Main avenue, weather permitting a fall completion.

First Gymkhana Under Floodlights Draws 2000 In Montana
About two thousand spectators attended the Teton Saddle club’s inaugural gymkhana on the high school football field. Riders from Fairfield Simms Fort Shaw Great Falls Shelby and Cut Bank competed. Miss Mae Tracy and Miss Audrey Crabtree of Fairfield performed trick riding. Judges were Al Peterson Chateau William Armstrong Simms and Frank Jessup Cut Bank. Winners to be listed next week. Local members plan to travel to Helena for the state gymkhana this weekend.

County agent reports heavy grasshopper infestations in areas from Chateau north to Dutton north east and from Teton ridge to Muddy Creek. Aerial spraying has yielded excellent results and sawdust baits will be used more. continued spraying on green fields is advised to reduce crop damage and future hoppers, protecting winter wheat.

Wet 1948 Growing Season Tops All Recent Precipitation
Raymond Kelly, Teton county extension agent, reports an exceptionally wet April through August 1948 with 16.26 inches of rain to date, far exceeding all prior records since 1939. The season’s total moisture stands at 17.28 inches, well above recent years and previous peak of 10.94 inches in 1943, signaling a historic precipitation level.

Plans Set for 4-H Judging at Choteau Pavilion
Plans are underway for the 4-H judging and demonstration contest at Choteau on August 28. High scorers win a trip to the State 4-H club congress in Bozeman September 13 to 16. A style revue will follow, and all clothing project girls will participate. Projects will be displayed and judged in blue red and white groups. The public is invited to view the 4-H works.
