The Chateau city council adopted a resolution of intention to construct a sanitary sewer in District 30 with an estimated cost of 23000 dollars. The plan will be financed by special assessments on district property. A final hearing is set for Sept 17 at 8 pm. owners may object in person or by counsel within 15 days.
Four smokejumpers dropped into the Lick Creek area west of Chateau to fight a small lightning blaze high in the Continental Divide. A second four man crew battled a nearby fire on Angle Mountain, five miles away, both under control by Saturday night. Both were Class A fires under one quarter acre.
All people interested in bowling are invited to attend a meeting at Moose Hall in Chateau Friday night at 8 p m. Great Falls City Association officers will explain how a bowling association and league operate and a bowling film will be shown. Coffee and doughnuts will be served. The new A and E Lanes in Chateau will open early next month.
Jim Cheetham district chairman of the Boy Scouts calls a district committee meeting for August 20 at 8 pm in the Dutton Legion Hall. Delegates from Augusta Brady Bynum Conrad Dupuyer Dutton Fairfield Wear Stott Grant Shoquist and others will discuss Fall Roundup plans and unit budgeting.
A regular meeting of the Order of Rainbow for Girls will be held Wednesday August 29 at 7 30 pm with regular business and officer elections. A public installation follows at 9 pm. Parents and friends of Rainbow Girls invited to attend.
Harvesting is under way as Chateau elevators receive new wheat and barley. Early yields run around 25 bushels per acre with test weights near 61 pounds, slightly below the 1955 level. Protein content ranges 12 to 13+ percent with some hail damage but overall outlook favorable for Teton county. Spring wheat appears promising and deliveries expected in about two weeks.
Montana producers face 20 cent per bushel discount on 23 named wheat varieties under the 1957 price support plan to discourage their planting. ADS officer Leo S. Kolstad notes most varieties were rarely grown in Montana and that certification by producers will be required for any deliveries.
Mr and Mrs Orvis Stensen and their Dillon family spent last weekend with Mr and Mrs Bob Gronverg. Stensen formerly taught music at Chateau high school and now teaches similarly at Dillon high school.
The 1956 57 budget for Teton County proposes a total levy of 32.25 mills, up from 31.75, with 12 mills for the general fund. Salary increases for county officials and extended social security coverage are funded, alongside stable road and bridge levies and reduced poor fund and noxious weed levies. Total expenditures rise to 630,909, funded by 321,245 from levies and 308,845 from cash and receipts.
Chateau public schools set opening for Tuesday September 4 with 9 a.m. registration except seniors who begin August 28. Seniors may register through September 1 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. evening appointments available. New students also register. Buses run on regular routes from Sept 4. Lunch served first day 20 cents with tickets at 2 and 4 dollars for 10 and 20 meals.
Funeral services for 79 year old Elizabeth B Smith of Choteau were held Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev A B Gravdal officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery Great Falls. She died August 13 in Everett General Hospital Washington after a five day illness. She is survived by son Fred and wife in Sacramento and daughters Ruth Baker in Sunburst and Mrs Malone in Chateau with other relatives.
Leslie Bud and Kenneth Jenkins have purchased the Fairfield Building Supply and taken over operations. The business began with Elmer Genger Fred Roth and William L Olson as stockholders, with Elmer Genger as longtime manager. The new owners plan to add wiring and build on a strong line of building materials, lumber, and heating equipment. Both new owners are local natives with decades in trades and electrical work.
Red Guthrie Jr of Great Falls joined the Breadloaf writers conference in Vermont for a two week teaching stint. The program operates with Middledavellegent Mekaant as an associated school.
All new students at Choteau Grade School may register with parents Sept 1 from 9 to 12 at the school office. Kindergarten eligibility is five by Oct 15 1956. first grade six by that date. Birth certificates required for kindergarten and first grade. physical exams recommended before school starts. School opens Sept 4 at 9 am with hot lunch. meal tickets priced at 2 and 4 dollars.
Funeral services were held at the Community Church in Fairfield for Gust Heyer 61 killed in a tractor accident on Lowry road south of Fairfield Saturday. The Rev Grant Moore officiated with burial in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Heyer born March 21, 1895 in Clintonville Wis lived in Minnesota before moving to TeTon county in 1934. He married Martha Luedtke in Minneapolis Oct 16 1913. Survived by widow two daughters Margaret Taylor Windham and Dorothy at the farm home four sons Lloyd Wesley Gust Jr Basat Sarasota Calif and Neenan Wis three brothers Otto Thead and Max and two sisters Ruby and Tillie.
Mr and Mrs Bill Linfield of Billings arrive to spend the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs J C Beck and her brother and family Mr and Mrs Wesley Beck providing a family gathering note in a society items segment.
Teton county attorney and state president LEO H. MURPHY will preside at the Montana County Attorneys Association state convention this weekend at the Many Glacier Hotel in Glacier Park. Attorney General Arnold H. Olsen will speak, with panel discussions on juvenile problems and criminal complaint forms. The event began this morning and continues until noon Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. William Irwin and Mrs. Heber Vance lead a local contingent attending the Eastern Star Grand Chapter session in Butte. Mrs. Irwin, secretary of the local chapter, and Mrs. Gordon Monkman join the secretary conference with Mrs. Marion Averill and other Grand committee members.

Amerada Oil Corporation plugged and abandoned its Madison limestone test well on the Choteau Cattle Co. ranch three miles west of Choteau after reaching 2752 feet with no oil or gas shows and sulfur water rising during DST. A nearby Phillips-Yeager well and Continental-Burdette tests also show Madison dry results as rumors of more wildcats spread in Teton county.
Choteau High School football begins practice this week with physicals at the gym tomorrow. Scrimmage starts Saturday as the team prepares for an eight game season. First game against Fort Benton on Sept 7 at Fort Benton.
The State Democratic convention to set the platform and conduct business will meet in Helena next Monday, August 27, chaired by Congressman Lee Metcalf. County delegates, state committeemen and women will attend, with representatives from Teton county. Tony Burgmaier and Mrs. Burgmaier will attend, as well as Senator Paul Rice and Representative Gordon McOmber.
Dr and Mrs RB O Brauer and family of Bellare Texas are visiting Ward ranch. Mrs Brauer is sister of Lester Lien. Dr Brauer, a plastic surgery specialist from Houston, Texas, toured Yellowstone Park en route and enjoys trout fishing amid cool Montana weather.
Three Choteau region youths join about 330 Montana juniors at the 10th annual Montana Boys State in Dillon. Duke Crary attends from Choteau with Lions Club backing. Bill Halvorson and Greg Whipple from Bynum are sponsored by the Choteau American Legion Post. The weeklong event features speeches by state leaders, a Virginia City visit, a buffalo barbecue, and demonstrations by state agencies.
Sutton Hammond, son of Tom Hammond of this city, named state manager for Prudential Life Insurance Co with headquarters at Billings. He has four years as district manager in Seattle and previously served as Billings agent. A Montana State University Missoula graduate and former semi pro baseball player at Great Falls, he now oversees the state's and northern Wyoming's Prudential operations. He recently visited the Hammonds in Choteau.
