The Choteau Woman’s club announces a Labor Day flower show tea and dance at the Legion pavilion in the city park. Exhibits open at 9 am with a noon deadline for entries. Prizes include donations from local businesses. proceeds benefit the public library.
Mrs. Frances Forgey of this city received a letter from Calpet Wyoming stating H A Lockhart a driller in the Calpet field was seriously burned in a well fire while pulling tools from a well. The rig burned and he suffered burns to face neck and chest. He was taken 60 miles to a doctor and is recovering nicely. Lockhart owns a ranch near Bird Hill southwest of town.
U S supervisor Hodgskiss says six Sun River project ranches totaling about 800 acres will be purchased by the Rural Rehabilitation Corporation. Families will move from submarginal lands near Roundup and Winnett as abstracts and titles are cleared. The district spans nine counties with several farmers assisted in machinery and purchases.
Cattle shipped recently by the Teton County Shipping association to South St Paul and Sioux City brought better prices than a year ago. Steers to 7 cents and cows to 14 1/2 cents, with a batch of fifteen steers selling for 61 4 cents. First shipment sent from Role in July and second from Chateau earlier this month. shippers include J. J. Holm, W. C. Dauwalder, H. O. Thompson, H. B. Hanson, J. Luinstra, E. I. Barrett, Clara Barrett, and Olaf Larson.
The local relief office will operate only four days per month with George Ellingson in charge. Open on the 21st and 22nd this month and the 5th, 9th, 19th, and 20th of September, relief applications to be filed at the county clerk's office. Ruth Tretheway, long-time office head, becomes secretary to A G Cameron in Great Falls WPA, after three and a half years in Chateau and prior roles with Bloomdahl Insurance and county relief administration.
Parlor Shoppe, owned by Mrs. O. Hansen, moved Tuesday to three doors north of the post office in the Hodgskiss building, formerly Logan and Howard store. The interior was refinished with a new floor and green ivory colors. The former space will become two apartments.
A Choteau patrolman reports several arrests for drunken driving and traffic violations as he monitored highways near Choteau. W B Violette, Gillis LaRance, H T Freids, Vic Olson, and Kenneth Sweetland paid fines or posted bail for offenses ranging from drunken driving to improper lights and plates. The article emphasizes mandatory two headlights and a red rear light, plus enforcement of entering main highways from side roads and proper clearance lights on trucks.
The Sun River district unveils a newly prepared grade school ahead of the September 3 opening. Principal Ruby Miller and staff will welcome students, with new hardwood floors, a redesigned basement, and elevated reading and music rooms. Students will experience marionette and puppet training, plus individualized reading in all grades.
Principal A B Guthrie announced the Teton County High School opening is postponed from Sept 3 to Sept 9. Miss Margaret Daly resigns as commercial instructor, prompting the delay and affecting dormitory readiness supervised by Mrs J Milson Moore.
The second annual Teton County 4-H club fair will be held in Chateau on September 21. Home economics and agricultural project work will be exhibited with judging rules requiring all home economic members to display at least three articles and submit stories. Adults may join in with threshed grains garden products stock canned goods and other exhibits if demand supports it. The committee led by C G McDermott Mrs Ora Schultz and others is coordinating premiums and layout.
The second marriage by contract in Teton county was filed last Saturday in the district court clerk's office. Frank O Connor, 22, of Neihart and Bertyl Baker, 18, of Great Falls are the contracting parties. The document was drawn by B I Packer with witnesses C E Stephens and M A Stephens.
President Roosevelt approves a 715000 appropriation to complete the Greenfield division of the Sun River reclamation project. The work includes a Gibson dam spillway upgrade costing 300000 and canals and laterals costing 415000 to irrigate about 93000 acres.
Judge C. H. Ferris and his wife observed their golden wedding with an open house in Choteau attended by more than 50 friends. Married August 20 1885 in South Dakota the couple later moved to Montana and raised a family in Teton County. He served as U S commissioner and justice of the peace while active in local pioneer circles.
Holmes of Chateau and Miss Jane Chandler of Chateau married Sunday at Cody Wyoming in a ceremony performed by the Episcopal rector. The couple then honeymooned via Yellowstone Park before returning home. Holmes is the son of Mrs. Henry Freeman and a Teton County High School graduate. Chandler is a Nunn Colorado graduate and Rexall Drug store employee.
A Pendray ball team met a nine from the Twilight league on the local diamond Sunday. The home side say they played seven innings and won 4 3, while visitors want two more innings. Players arrived late, the Chateau team joined, and Pendroy claim victory though locals dispute the bats. Rice and Moore pitched for the visitors, Dale and Moore opposed them.
Mrs. James Drinkwine of Farmington learns that Mrs. Walter Matthews died in Los Angeles on June 26. Matthews and her husband were longtime Teton County residents and former county surveyor. They lived in the Koch house era and later moved from Culbertson to Helena then Los Angeles. Matthews left three children.
Chief Justice and Mrs. Chas. Evan Hughes traveled through Choteau Monday en route to Glacier National Park. They stopped for lunch in Great Falls and visited the Taylor garage service station where Bud Taylor waited on them.
