Old age pension applications rise in Teton County

Forty two residents filed for old age pensions under a recent state law. County commissioners levied six mills to fund the old age pension program, with state and federal support expected to match shares. George Miller Succumbs Friday at Family Home

Mack Swain, a long time film star and brother of the Chateau man, died Friday at his family home. He had toured Montana and the Dakotas with his brother John Swain, manager of the Montana Dakota Utilities Co., and planned a Los Angeles return after visiting Glacier Park.

City Plans Water Bond Refinancing at Special Meeting

City council decided to redeem about 10,000 of water bonds and refinance the remaining balance. New issue to be about 11,000 with original 42,000 water bonds issued January 1, 1915 at 6 percent. Refinancing efforts follow 1925 and 1935 provisions with hopes for 4 percent or lower. Total city debt stands near 25,000, projected to drop to 15,000 after bond call. debt to be cleared by 1940.

Soil Erosion Control Projects Slated in Montana

A radio report says soil erosion headquarters will open in Great Falls around September 1 with work starting in northeastern Cascade and southeastern Teton counties. Washington confirms $3,000,000 for Rocky Mountain erosion programs, including $300,000 for Teton and Cascade counties as part of 93 new projects across 42 states.

Teton 4-H Honors And George F Miller Rites

In Chateau, George F. Miller aged 77 died at home after months of illness. A long Montana pioneer, he ranched 2080 acres, served as county commissioner 1906–1912, and held bank and Masonic roles. Funeral at Methodist church followed by interment in Chateau cemetery. 4-H 4-H club champions Mary Ellen Robison and Margaret Carlson led state home economics judging. Porter bench club also placed nationally.

Opened Barber Shop in Dutton

George Jackson of this city has opened a barber shop in Dutton with Dick Jones in charge. Dick, a Spokane barber school graduate, worked with Jackson there two months before moving to Dutton. The shop, in the Banpatyne building, opened Saturday. Dick is T. Tokrud’s son in law and a Teton county high school graduate.

Nelsons Return From North Dakota Trip

Mr and Mrs 8 BE Nelson and daughter Mildred Louise returned from a vacation visiting relatives in Kenmare North Dakota. They were joined by Vernon Jacobson of New York City and Mr and Mrs Romayne Taylor. The group drove to Lake Carlisle Saskatchewan for a brief outing as North Dakota wheat yields drop 50 to 75 percent due to black rust. other crops largely undamaged according to Mr Nelson.

Midgett to Wed Miss Adelaide Stillings in Missoula

J Kent Midgett former Teton county high and Cheuteau county high athletic coach and instructor will marry Adelaide Stillings in Missoula August 17. Stillings, former assistant librarian at Chouteau county library, plans to move to Missoula and then to Fort Benton after a wedding trip. He will direct athletics and teach science at the local high school.

No Schools In County In Red Declares Strong Finances

The 1933-34 school year ends with county wide districts showing strong finances as the annual report by the county superintendent notes only two districts with initial deficits and a substantial year end gain bringing total balances to 83 441 28 from 54 542 73.

J W Kerr of Farming appears among buyers at the national Hereford sale at the North Montana fair where 34 bulls and one cow sold as top U S stock. Fairfield Defeats Nanton Nine in Alberta Showdown

Fairfield beat Nanton of Alberta 5 to 3 on the Nanton diamond after 260 miles of travel. Pitcher Herman Earles struck out roughly 17, including nine straight in three innings, as Fairfield led 1 0, then added four in the fifth and blanked the locals until the eighth. A return game is set for Fairfield next Sunday, Aug 18, with manager Harry Knudtzon appealing for fan support to cover expenses.

Tax levies show relief for Teton county taxpayers

County commissioners set total levies at 40 mills for this year, down from 46.11 in 1934 and 44.83 in 1933, with the town of Chateau at 32 mills and several funds sustaining or adjusting rates, including a livestock levy cut to 3.5 mills and state levies staying constant.

Dutton to Receive $63,000 PWA Grant for Water Works

The Dutton Sentinel reports a Washington telegram announcing a $63,000 PWA loan and grant for Dutton Water Works. A special improvement district No. 2 will receive the funds for a water system with a $34,650 local repayment. Local incorporation was pursued to secure the loan and grant.
