Eight more Teton county young men will be inducted into the army next Wednesday August 12 by the local board. Classified 1-B they will report at 3 00 p m and leave soon after. A larger contingent is planned for August 17 with names not yet released. The August 12 group includes Toussaint B Jones Pendrey Charles W Perkins Robert R Kolste Eugene H Ameline Joe J Groninga Lloyd Alfred Love Tom Rosett and Clifton Sheble. Governor Ford issued guidance on married men and farm worker deferments under revised Selective Service rules urging boards to delay inductions of married men with families until no other registrants are available.
At the county commissioners’ August session the new budget lowers the county levy from 25 to 23 mills amid reserve fund strength. A 1 mill cut in the poor fund and a 0.4 mill cut in the bridge fund accompany a slight overall spending drop, with the general fund near 100000 dollars and total cash around 96923 dollars. In Chateau the city trims two mills from the levy from 22.5 to 20.5 mills as the band and museum funds dodge allocations due to inactivity and closure.
Mrs. John Brolsma of Chateau recently owned a chicken that yielded a large gold ring found in the bird’s gizzard. The ring’s stone setting was missing and no diamond was recovered. The odd discovery raises questions about how the chicken swallowed the object.
The Woman's club sponsors the annual flower show in the Larson block on Saturday August 22 with a tea in the afternoon. Admission to the show is free while tea costs 15 cents. Prizes are ribbons blue for first red for second and white for third. Local flowers from Choteau and area expected to shine.
A Friday evening hailstorm swept a two mile wide eastward path from the Guy Miller ranch to the Dakota border, causing extensive damage and wiping out many farmers crops including about 75 000 bushels of wheat. Losses run into thousands of dollars with widespread uninsured risk. Farmers from Dutton and other areas faced near total harvest failure as insurance adjusters traced the storm's narrow two mile track across Teton county.
Mrs. Car Sloan and her children spend the week with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Dave William Fisher. Hamilton is visiting the Swan son family. Bill plans to be stationed at Great Falls on the air base. Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Taylor returned from Seattle with their son Bud Taylor and his family, Bud now a parts man for Pacific Car and Foundry Co. and Mr. Taylor saw tanks assembled.
Teton county 4-H boys excel in the North Montana state fair with top prizes in baby beef, swine, dairy and cattle divisions. Calves sold at high prices to local butchers and Portland carloads show strong demand. County agricultural team wins the state championship among 20 teams. home economics results unavailable at press time. Added note honors by Fairfield and Farmington youths highlight a strong 4-H showing overall.
About 200 well wishers from across the state gathered at the Paul Kropp ranch on Sunday for a surprise renewal of vows honoring Te ton county's Kropps on their 25th wedding anniversary. The event featured a mock ceremony led by Carl Malone with Godfrey Torgerson as best man and Mrs. Larson as bridesmaid.
Eddy's Bread driver George Cartee of Great Falls escaped serious injuries Monday afternoon when his truck ran off the highway two and a half miles north of Chateau and tipped over. The machine was badly damaged and estimated repairs run about 350 dollars. A wrecker from Great Falls took the truck to the city, and Cartee resumed his rounds the next day with a substitute vehicle.
A free dance will be held at the Moose hall on Tuesday night August 11 for all draftees leaving this month including the August 12 and 17 contingents. Dances are sponsored by donations from businessmen and others. Free beer and refreshments will be served. everyone is urged to attend.
