At Monday night’s council meeting preliminary steps were taken toward replacing water mains in residential sections. Bids for 2700 feet plus of 6 inch pipe and 42 adapters will be received by Sept 6. The cost is about 3000 dollars with WPA support sought. if rejected, work may proceed without aid.
The board of county commissioners yesterday approved the preliminary budget as final for the ensuing year. This year’s total is 10,823 less than 1936 with figures of 207,547 and 218,370. Following budgets for schools are adopted and levies are planned for Monday August 9.
A. C. Baker of Baker Heyne & Company spent the last week in Chateau talking with livestock men. He predicts unusually high prices this fall due to drought and scarce cattle, noting Chicago remains the world's prime market with extensive out-of-town trading and shipments to 28 states from 1936 data.
After touring Utah and southern California with a Catalina islands stop and a Pacific coast drive, Mr. and Mrs. Ray I. McChie and family return to Chateau for a few days. They will then resume travel to Yellowstone National Park, proceed to Minot North Dakota to visit relatives, and continue north into Canada.
Three poultry demonstrations will be held in Teton county with extension poultry specialist Miss H. E. Cushman of Bozeman. The Ed Mitchell farm near Dutton hosts the first meeting on Tuesday September 7 with two more sessions September 8 and 9 at undecided locations. A new poultry house at the Ed Mitchell place will be shown.
Completed this week a business deal transferring ownership of the Parkway Cafe and beer parlor with its building and real estate in Chateau. A J Nutter & Co. will operate the firm, with Mr A J Nutter and Ernest Nutter, his son, and Mrs Nutter bringing restaurant experience. Improvements on the interior are planned in six weeks. Real estate sold by H G Young of Great Falls. restaurant business by Mr and Mrs Clarence Freesene. beer parlor from Dale Blakeley.
Two actions were filed this week in the district court office. A transcript of judgment from the eighth judicial district lists Carl V. Fisher as plaintiff and H. Adams as defendant for 1643.60 dollars. The second suit, filed August 3, to quiet title, is brought by Jackson E. Baker against all persons with B I Packer as attorney.
A large sale is set for the C. H. Schreiner place in Spring Valley, 16 miles south of Chateau, next Thursday afternoon after a free lunch at noon. Farm machinery, livestock and household goods will be sold. J. H. Byler acts as auctioneer with T. M. Healy as clerk. Mr and Mrs Schreiner, longtime Spring Valley residents, retire from farming and will visit relatives in the East after the sale.
Mrs Seley Moore spends the week at the Maynard home in Lake McDonald area while visiting during the summer. Dr and Mrs E B Maynard host the guest from the local area.
The Choteau Lions Club announces its standing committees for July 1937 to July 1938. Program Committee includes Gibson Monkman and others with dates and members listed. Membership, Presidents advisory, Lions education, Safety, Boy Scouts, and many more committees show named members and schedules. Special committees may be appointed as needed.
Helena Aug 4 An extension to August 10 for Montana employers to remit first half payroll contributions to the Unemployment Compensation fund has been announced by Barclay Craighead chair of the Montana commission. The move aims to ease delays in implementing the new system and contact thousands of employers.
Safeway Stores aims to open a new Chateau branch by Saturday August 21, as district manager L V Sigmad says. Work on the Hirshberg store annex proceeds with seven local workers rebuilding the south sections into a single room and removing a center pillar to brace the roof, while Beardsley oversees local shelving and fixtures and interior improvements.
Wm. F. Olsen, formerly a clerk in the Jos. Hirshberg & Co. grocery, starts at Bloom's Cash & Carry last Saturday. He succeeds George Loomis, who moved to Walla Walla with his wife to settle there. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Ramsey and their son went to Twin Bridges to visit Mrs. Ramsey's parents, with Mr. Ramsey returning home Saturday.
The county 4H D council will hold an all day meeting Tuesday August 31 to start the new home demonstration club year. Thirteen club presidents and secretaries attend as Mary Anderson of Power leads. Newly elected officers will be installed and project leaders plan a September 3 meeting on Soap and Water Cleaning for Special Clothes.
C O Juelfs of Diamond Valley told county commissioners that his son Earl joined the CCCs on the 9th of last month and serves as ambulance driver in Co. 967 at Belton. Earl passed a Missoula life guard test, earns a life guard badge, and will receive a three year certificate on January 1, 1928. He was also elected captain of his CCC company baseball team.

The complete annual examination of Teton county shows a June 24 cash balance of 219,497.33 with most funds on bank deposits and securities. Net indebtedness dropped from 107,830.86 to 57,503.17, a year decline of 59,327.71. The examiner urges action to reduce road fund warrant indebtedness totaling 041,648.58.
The county clerk's annual statement for the year ending June 30 1937 adds a reconcilement of current tax collections and a detailed 1936 political expenditures report. It presents receipts and payments, resources and liabilities, and notes reduced bonded indebtedness though cash balance dipped from last year.
Lions club volunteers announce free aquatic lessons by Miss Catherine Zion a PE graduate. Classes begin Monday at the local pool with enrollment at the pool office. Season ends in about a month with a water carnival as the finale.
Rain on Saturday and Sunday benefitted Teton county and surrounding areas with Cha teau and Pendrey reports near 1.42 inches. Dutton and Diamond Valley saw .30 to .50 inches while Farmington neared two inches. Farmers cite improved subsurface moisture, potential yield gains for late planted grains, and recharged water storage as grazing lands, pastures, and meadows refresh.
The Te ton county home talent Chautauqua committee met at the county agent's office with W. G. Dauwalder Harry Labach Ruth Monkman Ray Nelson and Chris Swenson present. Absent were the Dutton Lion Club and Home Demonstration council. The event runs September 24 25 and 26 with admission prices cut in half adult season 50 cents single 25 cents children season 25 cents single 15 cents. One act plays each evening plus band music chorus puppet shows and a saxophone sextette. Mae Walton leads the chorus. Miss Walton discussed chorus work with County Agent Fred Willson. One evening devoted to all county chorus and another to a men's chorus. Former County Agent Robert Clarkson now with the Resettlement Administration at Denver may attend. The State University is also being contacted for a talk during the Chautauqua.
The interior of a new Oldsmobile owned by Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Crossen Jr. was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning after they returned from a fair in Great Falls Monday night. George Thompson spotted smoke and Crossen extinguished it with a garden hose. cause undetermined with complete insurance coverage.
