Seed weight protein content and seeding rate tests for spring wheat

Montana Agricultural Experiment Station tests at Bozeman and three branches show test weight above 55 pounds per bushel did not significantly affect yields. Yields were similar for 60 and 55 pound seed on irrigated Sid ney Huntley and dry Moccasin land, with slight irrigation advantage for high weight seed. High protein seed offered little yield gain. 30 seeds per square foot produced highest yields across locations. seed source showed no significant yield differences when used across stations.

Army Cutworm Infestation Noted In Central Montana Fields

Army cutworms have been found in grain fields in central Montana prompting entomologist George Roemhild of Montana State College to urge field checks. Infestations may persist for about three weeks as worms feed on tops of plants. The pest threatens grain crops, sugar beets, and other crops. control methods include spraying with endrin at 0.1–0.2 lb per acre, by ground or aircraft, depending on worm size. Local family notes include Jack Van De Riet and wife of Spokane visiting Augusta after Easter.
