Explorer's Tablet Found on Cheyenne River Bluff
A zinc plate buried by Chevalier de la Verendyre during his 1741 expedition has been discovered on the Cheyenne river bluffs in South Dakota, confirming route details and sovereignty claims. The eight inch square plate bears France's coat of arms and a Latin inscription, with a second inscription reading Le 30a Mars 1743. Researchers note Verendyre traveled to the Missouri River area and marked locations with metal plates during his westward exploration.
