In a full church, Dr E B Maynard warned there is no antidote for fusel oil in moonshine and better whiskey is not a cure for alcoholism. He urged temperance in schools and families and highlighted the church and home role in training youth away from liquor.
The Chateau Lions Club will sponsor a yard and garden contest with K E Sturgis as president. Lion Ed win Dover is named general chairman with a six member committee and department heads for entries prizes publicity judging and education. The slogan is You win if you lose and aims at civic beautification and health. Bishop Faber and Rev Young officiated at Episcopal services last Sunday.
Grads from Teton High this year may reach 49 as formal beer license applications were approved by the county board during its April session. Several named retailers and hotels were approved to transmit to the state board for final action. informal apps were not considered. A state board ruling says no limit on licenses for hotels, restaurants, and clubs.
Herbert Bernard Hilt 17 a student at Teton county high died at Chateau hospital after collapsing at school Wednesday afternoon He had a weak heart and clinicians used heart stimulants and an oxygen tank He was born in Dutton November 1915 survived by four brothers and his father John J Hill Funeral will be Saturday at 10 from the Catholic church in Dutton with Rev Fr J F Schulte officiating
Mrs Arthur Ramsey was chosen president of the Chateau Woman's club at the annual officer election held Tuesday. Outgoing president was Mrs M S Bullerdick, serving two years. New officers include Mrs Arnold Hanusa vice president and Mrs Gay Franklin corresponding secretary.
The Pinnell Fur Co. has discontinued its city office for the season. W. E. Pinnell said last week he may again spend the spring and summer on the coast.
Principal Guthrie announced Teton High expects the 49 member senior class to graduate this spring after final exams. Commencement will be May 19 with seniors hosting the program and presenting eight National Education Association points in talks. The senior class play is set for April 28 and a full nine month term is planned.
Miss Mary Sulgrove Miss Elsie Hirshberg and Miss Jane Guthrie were initiated into Alpha Chi Omega last Saturday at the State university. Miss Grace Thompson, a Whitman College student in Walla Walla Washington, also joined the sorority.
Teton county high begins track practice on March 20 with nineteen boys reporting. Coach E L Chleffman notes a balanced squad of lettermen including Id Yeager Harry Yeager Jimmy Connore Kenneth Harmon and Walter Moz er. events listed span sprints hurdles jumps throws and relays with tentative plans for three to four meets and a May 5 invitational.
Pendroy resident Jay Gitchell visited Chateau and spoke of his daughter Winona Gitchel a Northern Montana College freshman who earned three A grades for the quarter ending March 16 the best in her class. Her prior report showed two A’s and two B’s. Winona a 1982 Teton High graduate credits her training here for college success and holds a 4 H club scholarship with leadership from Mrs G R Talbert of Pendroy.
County Agent Robert Clarkson reports March precipitation at .10 inches, far below the normal .76, with temperatures near normal. April’s normal rainfall is .83 inches, but records show extreme highs of 2.33 inches in 1925 and a trace in 1910.
Chateau council passes a beer ordinance mirroring state law with 19 sections and immediate effect. It sets a $50 license for retailers hotels and clubs, prorated after January 1, and enforces state rules while allowing suspensions if county vote changes.
Seniors will perform a Grecian costume play titled Pygmalion and Galatea on Friday April 28. The production features a no admission policy with a free will box for contributions and a limited reserve seating block priced at 15 cents. Rehearsals are underway.
In Ward 1, C. H. Malcolm won re election with 92 votes while Dr E B Maynard received 46 amid 139 total ballots cast with one invalid. In Ward 2, Charles A Franks led with 121 votes to Henry Robisons 58 as alderman races concluded. Incumbents won police magistrate and treasurer. J G Jackson and W Butchart retained posts.
Last Saturday night marked the season finale of the Masonic social calendar with a merry April fool affair. E Hodgskiss presided at the banquet entrance while guards separated couples. later cookies contained salt and bits of cheesecloth. Former Congressman Scott Leavitt spoke, joking about his defeat and praising democratic government. a DeMolays skit aired on station AFAM and dancing closed out the event with Clarkson’s Orchestra.
County Attorney B I Packer returned from Helena where he assisted Attorney General Raymond Nagle in preparing a Supreme Court brief for the Hoffman murder appeal. Hoffman's counsel argues jury prejudice and repudiation of a confession. no date set for the hearing. Hoffman is sentenced to death for the murder of George Burrell.
