Rumor proved true as a Ku Klux Klan gathering was held Monday night at the K P Hall in Choteau. About 27 members have been identified and opponents organized observers, with headlights scanning suspects as they returned home. The group's purpose and activities remain under close watch.
The regional forest office announces government photographs for public purchase and related items like enlargements and slides. C A Butler returns from Missoula and will resume duties at Ear Mountain. Miss Mary Elizabeth Forrest resumes work, replacing Miss Iphi Mills, transferred to Missoula. G A Fredrikson arrives from Stark for winter work with AB C M Go. C H McVey returns to Bhickleaf after six weeks in the supervisor's office. Lewis and Clark forest approves a bridge project over the Teton River near the forks.
The Cash Meat Market has installed a new refrigerator display counter at considerable expense. The feature uses a fresh air system circulating from both ends packed with ice to keep foods at an even temperature, typically around 30 degrees but adjustable as needed.
The Clerk of the Court recorded two new civil actions this past week. E. J. Lander & Co. sue Oscar W. Kerr et al for foreclosure of mortgage. Chas Mansfield sues W. E. Mansfield et al for foreclosure of mortgage.
Sheri Wm. D. Reigtam and Under sheriff W. N. Streeter left for Great Falls to attend the federal trial before Judge Pray. Claude Schaefer and Sidney West face charges of illicit whiskey manufacture. Schaefer arrest occurred February 4 in Spring Valley country. West was present but charged later. West previously served as a juryman in liquor case trials.
The Women’s club elected Vera Hentges as president and Gertrude Hirshberg as vice president with Cora Foote secretary and Eva McDonald corresponding secretary. Annabel Smith treasurer and Ruby Looney reporter were chosen. Hentges to attend the national convention in Los Angeles June 3 13 with Robert Sturgeon as alternate. The club met with light attendance as some members attended Paderewski in Great Falls. A $10 prize offers for a member scoring 100 percent in a musical contest, three weeks to prepare. The next meeting is April 15 at the T H Pridham home with Myrick in charge. The April 16 session is expected to draw a large crowd for the new officers.
Miss Ruth Andrews of Chateau visited relatives on the beach over Sunday. Mr. and Mrs Edwin Anderson hosted a Saturday evening party in Farmington with gifts and dancing. Mr. and Mrs Ernest Arensmeyer welcomed a son born March 15, 1924. George Toole sale drew locals including Cal Binford and Gregor Tangen.
At the next board of county commissioners meeting the decision on renewing the county agent contract for another year will be considered. The present agent Robert M. Clarkson’s term ends June 30, 1923, with county costs about 2,397.81 for the year, aided by state funds. Polling places set for district No. 1 election April 5 from 2 to 6 pm at the public school. District trustees Jas T Robison and E H Myrick unopposed for two and three year terms. City election April 7 polls 8 am to 6 pm at the city engineer's office First ward and courthouse Second ward. One contested race for First ward alderman between Dr E J Crary and Otis Mellon. mayoral and Second ward alderman races appear unopposed following filing deadline.
Joseph G. Young age 25 and Ruth Minerva Baker age 18 both of Gilman Montana were married Tuesday April 1 1924 in Clerk of the Court Mrs B M Jacobson office. Justice J B DeHass performed the ceremony with Miss Dorothy Longmuir and W N Streeter as witnesses.
Mr and Mrs D F Waterman hosted relatives and Mrs Ida F Waterman for a day. Dominic Banis returned from Great Falls on business. Seven grade pupils staged a playlet "April Fool" at the school written by Mary Jane England. Bon Ton members canceled a country trip due to a snowstorm.
At the request of President Coolidge Attorney General Daugherty submitted his resignation effective immediately. He defended his record against charges while acknowledging the senate inquiry and noted the need to avoid embarrassment to the administration.
March 1924 differed from 1922 and 1923 mainly in cloudiness. Precipitation was only slightly higher than the previous two years. The season peaked with storms on seventeen days, compared with four in 1928 and five in 1922.
The Par ent-Teachers association resumes after scarlet fever delay and will convene on April 28 with a state association speaker. all are invited to attend.
