Washington reports indicate high level consideration of dramatic moves with Spain as the Maine sails toward Havana. Officials deny immediate changes, while many deem a crisis looming and anticipate further developments any day.
Washington special cites a message dated the 20th from Stewart in Memphis noting suspected yellow fever near Edwards Mississippi. Dr Carter of the marine hospital service is to Edwards to investigate as reports mention a man, wife, and children with fever about twelve miles away. No Edwards cases since December 10th, and no fever reported in other areas.
The Senate spent over six hours Wednesday debating a resolution on paying the long term bond costs of silver. The discussion remained formal with arguments from Teller and supporters including Mr Virginis and Messrs Hour and a Position, focusing on government payment of bonds.
President Dole of Hawaii arrives in Washington with Mrs Dole at 2 30 p m on Wednesday. Secretary Sherman and Assistant Secretary Atlee greet the party at the Burlington and Quincy depot. A formal White House reception follows with President McKinley and officials.

The Senate opened doors at 12 15 p m after executive session and moved to general business. A bill to indemnify Pennsylvania for 1864 militia expenses passed the Senate and J W Griggs of New Jersey was confirmed as Attorney General of the United States.
Maryland legislature votes 63 to 4 to elect Judge Lewis E. McComas as United States senator to succeed Arthur P. Gorman. The breakthrough came after a Friday caucus, with Westcott and Shafer switching from Shaw to McComas, followed by several belt allies.
Four hundred delegates gathered at the Grand Opera house in Indianapolis on Tuesday for the monetary convention chaired by Chairman Hanna. The crowd, up 100 from last year's first Indianapolis gathering, signaled strong business interest in currency reform. Delegates from multiple states filled the hall, with private boxes crowded by well-dressed ladies as the venue wore national colors.
A head end collision between two freight trains on the Louisville and Nashville railroad near Upton Kentucky early Tuesday morning killed three men and injured four. The deceased include William Miller engineer of No. 16 and Lee Ellison brakeman of No. 16 both from Louisville and an unidentified 22 year old tramp. Miller failed to wait for southbound No. 71 at Upton and the crash occurred on a curve a quarter mile beyond the station.
Irish Citizens of Greater New York join the Irish Immigration Society in opposing a pending immigration bill. A resolution was unanimously adopted urging the president and executive committee to take proper action to oppose its passage.
The United States battleship Maine commanded by Charles D. Sigsbee arrived in Havana harbor at 11 o clock Tuesday after leaving Key West on January 24. It was saluted by forts and warships.
In Nashville the Democratic caucus required nineteen ballots for senator Tuesday night. McMillin lost one ballot, Turley lost two, and Taylor gained three, with the eighty fifth ballot showing McMillin 37 Turley 27 Taylor 24. Turley and Taylor supporters moved to adjourn. Rep Thompson led a push to break the deadlock by backing the lagging candidate. Daytime Senate voting resembled a farce, Republicans backing Colonel E. J. Sanford while Democratic votes dispersed, yielding nearly ninety names cast for United States senator.
The Missouri Democratic State Central Committee met in St Louis and planned a state convention at Springfield on August 10. Silver Republicans demanded representation on the state ticket and threatened to align with Republicans if not granted. The committee decided to follow the National Free Silver Committee’s recommendation.
In a Monday session Senator Walthall of Mississippi presented the credentials of H. D. S. Money as senator to succeed the late Senator George and Money took the oath of office after serving by gubernatorial appointment. Walthall also submitted a Mississippi joint resolution urging U S intervention in the Cuban war on behalf of the insurgents, peaceably if possible, forcibly if necessary.
A Indianapolis based report notes the monetary convention adjourned after a two day session. Delegates praised the currency reform plan calling for a gold convertible paper currency with elastic volume and growth, silver parity, limited bond issuance, and gradual implementation. The group urged Congress to enact these principles to secure a stable financial system and national prosperity. The executive committee may be extended to add members as needed.
Alabama Senator Morgan debated Hawaiian annexation in the Senate Monday denying ex-President Cleveland opposed annexation. Morgan cited a Princeton dispatch and attacked Cleveland’s statements as ex parte and duplicitous while defending his own executive-session remarks.

A midnight fire gutted the six story Great Eastern block on Riverside Avenue Spokane. Seventy five to one hundred roomers occupied upper floors with twenty five believed saved. Crowds flooded the streets as rescues occurred including a man sliding down a rope with his babe. Building owned by Louis Levinsky of San Francisco. cost $225000 and insured for $50000. First floor housed John W. Graham's stationery stock.
Senor Quesada, Cuban junta representative in Washington, received letters from Cuba detailing events through December 20. General Calixto Garcia reported the safe landing and reception by insurgents of the latest expedition from the United States. He said supplies, especially ammunition for dynamite guns, were sufficient to sustain a campaign in the eastern division for many months.
