A severe gulf coast storm smashed Florida coast towns from Tallahassee to Carrabelle. Houses, mills, wharves, and turpentine interests were toppled. crops damaged. one mill hand drowned. Wires down, rail lines washed out, and relief parties moved to aid survivors.
Ben E. Rich, a Mormon missionary from Tennessee, plans to travel to Georgia to present letters from Utah governors to Governor Allen D. Candler. He seeks protection for elders preaching in Georgia and offers a reward for the apprehension of those who assaulted them. He argues for constitutional religious rights and promises to pursue justice.
Democrats meet and nominate John Walter Smith for governor and Raynor for general with Joshu s W. Carroll County as a key candidate. The convention votes were unanimous with acclamations and Edwin Mrith as principal opponent at the last moment.
John Mullins, a thirty year old black man, tried to assault Mrs. James Cook two miles south of Senoia. She was seized from behind at her bedroom window but screamed unbelieved. a buggy sound delayed him. Captured near Senoia, mob pursued to Newnan but sheriff kept guard and moved Mullins to Newnan jail.
W. J. Glazier a German native living in Albany Georgia for eight years is jailed in Dougherty County on a wife murder charge. Neighbors say he beat his wife severely. she died Wednesday morning. Glazier denies the accusation and claims innocence.
Advices to Surgeon General Wyman from Hampton show four new suspected yellow fever cases, with officials stressing the need to observe Rule 2 for ten days after leaving Hampton and Phoebus, especially for travelers who stayed overnight.
The African Methodist Episcopal Presiding Elders' Council of Georgia and Alabama closed in Birmingham after a session discussing emigration to Africa. The main witnesses have not been summoned to Greenville and details of his link to Winthrop College construction where eight of convicts were employed for months will be explored.
A Detroit special describes General Russell A. Alger's city and state welcome on a Wednesday. About 1,000 marchers and 400 onlookers, including militia and veterans, greet him with tears and applause as Mayor Maybury and Governor Pingree praise his war service and denounce press attacks.
