Two companies of state militia were ordered by Governor Candler to Bainbridge to prevent further lynching. They arrived at 8 a.m. Wednesday and stood guard around the Decatur county jail. John Miller alias Williams was not lynched. the mob dispersed before the troops’ arrival. He was moved to Savannah that night for safety under Thomasville guards.

Adolph L. Luetgert the Chicago sausage maker serving life in Joliet for his wife’s murder was found dead in his cell. Doctors reported death from fatty degeneration of the heart.
