The Childress City Council plans a 7 pm regular session Thursday with an 11 item agenda including the new city budget and revenue sharing. City Manager David Galligan notes the revenue sharing budget is on the docket.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gilbert C. Simpson of Monroe Louisiana will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Sterlington. Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe directs. Mrs. Simpson born May 13 1937 in Vernon Texas died after a lengthy illness in Monroe hospital. She was raised in Childress and married Gilbert Simpson in Childress in 1955. Survivors include her husband four sons a daughter and her parents. Memorials to the American Cancer Society invited.
The Kiwanis club hosts a taco supper at Fair Park Auditorium on Friday September 9 from 5 30 to 7 00. Adults pay 2 dollars. Proceeds support local service projects.
The Associated Press reports Labor Day weekend traffic deaths did not meet projections with safety officials predicting 44 fatalities. The toll stood at 28 early today, while a five-fatality boat accident and several drownings swelled the violent death total in Texas.
Quarter horse Hot Idea ridden by Terry Lipham defeats Town Policy to claim $330,000 in the 19th All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. Lipham, 1967 starter in the event, celebrates the largest prize of his career as Hot Idea clocked 21.75 seconds for the 440 yards. City Councilman Walter Lockhoof invites area residents to a 7:30 p.m. workshop at the West Texas Utility building in Childress. The Tri-Region Health Systems Agency aims to gather ideas for improving health care under a five year federal study spanning 44 counties.
State figures show a preliminary 1976 registration total of 10 220 919 up from 9 687 081 in 1975 with Harris County leading at 1 670 596. Dallas and Tarrant counties also posted gains while Loving County reported the fewest registrations. Beginning next year the system shifts to year round staggered fees to reduce lines.
The Dale Kettle firm of Fort Worth Texas won a 44790 contract from the Federal Aviation Administration to build a remote receiver transmitter facility between Childress and Paducah. The project will improve pilot communication with Fort Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center and includes a building for equipment and four 600 foot towers. Commissioning is set for this fall.
Pre dawn showers moved through the Edwards Plateau in Central Texas dumping about half an inch of rain in San Antonio and Austin. A new line of showers gathered in the Gulf of Mexico and threatened the coast near Galveston while areas outside the shower zone stayed clear or partly cloudy with 60s in West Texas and near 80 in South Texas. The forecast predicts more showers, some locally heavy, in central Texas with mainly clear skies elsewhere and temperatures near 100 in extreme South Texas and 80s to 90s elsewhere.
