UPI reports 1,400 more US Marines with helicopters landed in Viet Nam, boosting totals toward 100,000. In Saigon a B52 raid inflicted heavy Viet Cong losses while a Vietnamese unit found 90 enemy dead in Zone D near Saigon. An UH-1 helicopter was shot down with heavy casualties en route to the operation. Marines at Chu Lai doubled helicopter strength as Col. William G. Johnson asserts the need to stay and fight. A patrol near Da Nang killed one Viet Cong and captured several wounded, grenades, and gear in a nearby skirmish.

Former Childress resident William S. Newberry was named to fill the unexpired term of Jack D. Staples on the Texas Public Employees Association Board of Directors from the Texas Highway Department. A 1946 Chil dress High School and 1951 Texas Tech BBA graduate, Newberry served 18 months in the Marines with a Korea period and held roles in District 14 and the State Highway Engineers Division before becoming an administrative technician in the division. He and his wife Jane and children Billy and Mary Jayne live in Austin. he has been a Chapter No. 1 floor captain of the association for six years. Staples left to join the Bureau of Public Roads in Washington, DC.
