U S troops with tanks aircraft and artillery struck a Communist strategy meeting northwest of Saigon. 59 defenders were killed as 800 American soldiers attacked after intelligence linked the gathering to Buddha birthday truce. One American died four wounded.
In Austin the House passed a resolution to adjourn by Saturday with a possible later date if needed. Senator Don Kennard launched a filibuster against recalling the UT Dallas bill, while Gov. Smith pressed for an upper level two-year UT Dallas and its governance under UT regents.
A $25,000 reward is offered by the Houston law firm of two attorneys killed in a Georgia plane crash near St George. The firm seeks information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for sabotage. Authorities found a white substance in a fuel tank believed to be sugar, testing awaited. FBI involvement noted.
A meeting to organize the Childress Roping Club will be held at 8 30 p m Friday at Ranchouse Restaurant. All interested persons are urged to attend.
The space agency released film and 87 color stills from Apollo 10 as a rehearsal for Apollo 11. Armstrong and Aldrin practiced lunar approach in a Cape Kennedy simulator while mission control guided them, marking a first link between control and crew.
Advanced ticket sales for the Miss Childress Pageant began today through the Jaycees. Tickets cost 2 for adults and 1 for students and children. At the noon meeting the Jaycees chose a Western theme. Ricky Mills joined as a new member and James Driver attended as a guest.
UPI report from Paris says during the 19th session of Vietnam peace talks Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge and Deputy Ha Van Lau exchanged strong denouncements. Lodge criticized a Communist demand to exclude Saigon and urged South Vietnam participation.
The Miss Childress Pageant seeks entrants aged 18 by Sept 2, 1969 and single for the annual event sponsored by the Childress Jaycees. Only five candidates are named so far, with sponsors Althea Allison Texas Air Service Sharon Merrell Helen's Shoppe Marinell Freebey Frost Enco Tanya Horton Wellington Kathy Burke Estelline. The pageant is set for 7 p.m. Saturday June 7 in the Junior High Auditorium with activities beginning Monday. entrants must submit to Tommy Harwell Don Gage or Ray Don Williams.
S. M. Moree, 72, of Dumas and former Kirkland resident, died at Dumas Memorial Hospital. Services set for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Dumas Bible Baptist Church with burial in a Dumas cemetery. Born in Paris, Texas, he retired as a service station operator and came to Dumas from Sunray four years ago. Survived by wife Edna, two sons Leonard of Dumas and Joe of Perryton, two daughters Helen Etheredge of Dumas and Lucille Willoughby of Ontario, California, four brothers Will, James, Jewell of Dallas and Louie of Borger, a sister Manerva Alexander of Paris, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Memorial Day services are set for 6 30 am and 11 am at Childress Cemetery under a combined sponsorship of local veterans groups. Participants will mark graves with flags and hold a memorial service, with all citizens urged to display the U S flag at home or business. Organizations include Veterans of Foreign Wars David Brown Post 2512 American Legion Cox Farr Post 65 Forty and Eight World War I veterans and auxiliaries.
Arab guerrillas fired Soviet made rockets at Jericho for the second straight day wounding one Arab and damaging homes and a power transformer. An Israeli communique blamed Jordanian facilities and said the attack followed similar shelling by Arab forces.
Legislators study a $2.8 billion Texas budget that Gov. Preston Smith could veto. A 10 member conference committee cut millions from general revenue to avoid new taxes and shifted to a one year budget, risking a summer session to pursue a traditional biennial budget with $250 to $300 million in new taxes. The panel eliminated several building projects and delayed funds for new colleges, with only modest support for a University of Texas at Dallas branch.
Veterans count three year enrollment rise under the post Korean GI Bill says VCSO George Spear and regional manager Jack Coker. In Texas 68739 veterans entered training with 43390 in college and 23383 in other schools. Entitlement now 36 months max with 48 months across VA programs. Eligible vets may earn diploma while underfull entitlement. Training must end by May 31 1974 or eight years after service.
Mayor C. J. Lyons will ride a Licensed Vocational Nurses Association sponsored float in the Old Settlers Parade on July 17. LVNA also approved buying a walnut finished rostrum for the new hospital chapel and discussed final plans for the Cutest Kid Contest on July 19.
